Default What happens if I fail STEP 3 before the rank order list?

hey guys, I'm trying to clear STEP 3 and be eligible to obtain an H visa, however, im afraid that failing might hurt my chances of getting accepted into programs that have offered me IVs.

Do programs get my step 3 result automatically? or do i have to authorize it?

You have to authorize the release of USMLE transcript in ERAS. However, your ECFMG status report will be automatically updated to show that you've given step 3 (I'm guessing. You can verify this with ECFMG). Even if the programs miss it and you end up matching, it probably will not look good that you weren't honest from the beginning. My advice would be to not take step 3 just for the purpose for H1 visa unless you are confident that you can pass. Above-average to average scores on other steps and a failed step 3 will be more damaging to your application than not taking the exam.
Just my thoughts.

Thank you saxo, I certainly dont intend to fail, i have good step 1 & 2 scores (240+), but im just checking how catastrophic failing before the match would be. H1 visa can be life changing... I think ill do many simulated exams before the real thing and if im not confident , ill delay. thanks
