Listening Applying for "Back Up" Specialty!

Hello i have a question,
I just want IM and i have been told to apply to FM as a back up. Now say if I get into FM I would have to complete a year of FM and than reapply to IM, where as if I dont get IM, I could do sum research and apply next year instead of completing 1 year of FM and apply after 2 years! I'm a little confused as to how these back up programs work??

Backup means you actually do that residency if you don't get your first choice. Sure, you could step out after a year and reapply but not so sure how that would look on your CV (remember, you're supposed to commit to the contract). I'm sure there are people who do this but I wouldn't suggest it as your first option (maybe that's just me).

That totally depends on you, I mean, are you willing to take the risk of not getting matched?
Why IM and not FM? Is it because of a fellowship afterwards? There are many options / combinations for FM, too.
I don't know if I would put all my cards only on one spot / specialty.
Also, there's always preliminary or transitional and many other options.
This is just my opinion..

Hi dr_mhm, even I m thinking to apply in FM for back-up though not that interested, especially since I think there is no fellowship n all after FM n u ahve to rotate in all different dept during its rotation. can u mention what types of options we have after doing FM?

Thank u!

check FREIDA under combined programs, there are some options already there.
also, some of the web sites from FM Programs tell you that some of their graduates do a 1 yr fellowship in whatever - check them out. I couldn't tell you which ones as I'm not reviewing those myself yet.
good luck!
