Default Lets do it !

Categorical position: Offers full residency training required for Board Certification in a particular specialty.
Preliminary position: Offers 1-2 years of training, often prior to entry into advanced specialty programs. Can also be called an internship. Surgery and internal medicine training programs can offer preliminary positions in addition to categorical positions.
Transitional Year: Another kind of preliminary year training program or “internship.” The objective of the Transitional Year is to provide a well balanced and broad based clinical year program of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines. A Transitional Year can be ideal training for many types of postgraduate year (PGY) 2 or advanced training programs.

***There is a difference between the Preliminary Position and the Transitional Year. The Preliminary Position is focused on a particular field, such as Internal Medicine or Surgery. The Transitional Year provides a broader exposure to different fields whereby the resident rotates through cores and electives much like he/she did in
medical school.

Internal Medicine

Step 1
-> Average scores below which programs generally do not grant interviews (207)
-> Average scores above which programs almost always grant interviews (228)

Step 2 ck
-> Average scores below which programs generally do not grant interviews (207)
-> Average scores above which programs almost always grant interviews (227)

Default Let me see !!!

1) In my opinion categorical is more competitive.

2 ) I think from an applicant's point of view it seems very beneficial to apply to both the preliminary and categorical positions at the same program. This is because one can click both options on myeras and it seems a very good way of increasing one's chance of getting interviews without spending more money.
Now this can be disadvantaged because a PD may think that you are not dedicated to a categorical position but you are simply applying to it as a back up in case you do not match to the other specialty you are interested in. So, do not ever do this without a proper thought and planning and avoid applying to these two positions at the same program.
Everybody knows that a preliminary year in internal medicine is required to pursue others specialties.
If, however, one needs to apply to preliminary positions then he/she must do that by applying to preliminary positions at programs where he/she does not apply to categorical positions.
In case if one still applies to both the positions at a single program and is called for an interview then he/she should tell the program that they applied to both these positions only because of their extreme interest to match in that particular program.

Hope this help!
