Arrow Residency RIGHT AFTER internship

Hi! I am an IMG currently doing my one year of internship as part of my MBBS degree in a university affiliated with Dr. MGR university, India. My internship started in March 2012 and is projected to end March 2013. I have taken my Step 1, 2CK and 2 CS. My plan is to apply to residency this year itself that way I can immediately join my residency in July 2013 after completion of my internship without losing time.

The problem for me lies in ECFMG certification. My graduation is in September (in the middle of my internship.. I know right, weird) where I will receive my FINAL medical school diploma. My college has refused to issue me a FINAL medical school transcript because it will not contain my internship details. As you all know, ECFMG certification is required by ROL. I do have my transcripts that include my first four years of medical school. My college is willing to give a PROVISONAL transcript that only excludes my internship. Anyways, I was looking at the ECFMG site and they say at least four accredited years set by ACGME is needed for verification.

So, I took up this issue with ECFMG and they said that they cannot verify or say anything unless they see the transcript for themselves.

My questions are:
Has anybody tried sending a provisional transcript without their internship details and gotten it verified?

Has anybody attempted what I am doing (immediately pursuing residency after their internship) or known of anybody that has tried and succeeded?

The reason that I am asking is that, as you all known, the whole process of applying for residency is a lot of time and of course $$$$$$$$$$$$. If I know I have a chance of ECFMG certification by the time of ROL I am willing to go ahead. I havenít really seen the issue addressed about doing residency right after internship and that is why I brought it up.

Any input will be greatly appreciated. (Long thread I know )

Wow!!amazing!!step 1,2 ck and Cs before completing MBBS in india!1thats some achievement..dont know if i can help you, because am still in the process but IMO wait for this year, doesnot make a difference if you aply next year(yog will be 1 year)...in the mean time do some research work in USA(can you please tell us your scores and the specality you are applying)...but applying late and missing out interviews will not be good..better wait 1 year (you are still a fresh graduate) and apply with all records ready by sep 1 of next year..thats my opinion..i have read threads of UK graduate matching into peds and getting 14 iv s in a forum when he applied the same year as his yog,but his session ended on march that year and he had 6 months usce and 2 research publications all in USA..its up to you to take the risk with so much money at satke..1 year wont make a difference as yog cut off is 3 years..type your scores and yog in Matcharesident(google it) and see for yourself how many programs are short when you enter your yog and match this year and next year hope it helps

Most programs require ECFMG certification by the time you start residency training (i.e. July). I think you can manage getting certified by then.

There are others who require certification before even applying (i.e. September), but if you are already done with your steps I think they might overlook early certification.

In my case, I'm also applying this year for the 2013 Match and I sent my Medical Education Credentials but the process takes a very long time (2-3 months minimum), I will not be certified before September but hopefully by December or January.

Hope that helps,

I think i m in the same boat. I was wondering is there any other case out there and its really good to see ur post. About myself

1) Current status - Intern
2) expected date of grad - 31 st MArch
3) Step1, Step 2 ck - clear , CS - given result awaited
4) USCE - 2 months (Radiology)
5) publications - 2 (Radiology)
6) Field of interest - Radiology

So my questions are little bit same as of urs , but there is one thing i wld like to add.
1) FOR getting through the MATCH process u need to be ECFMG verified before ROL ( 15th FEB ) .

2) For starting Residency ( 1 july ) u need to be ECFMG certified.

3) Rest depends on particular program u apply at. But one thing is for sure if u r competitive enough everything is negotiable.

Quote - Unless u try, Answer is always "NO".

Thank you for your reply! My USMLE scores are good enough for IM and that's what I plan on applying to... I already have a potential list of programs that meet my particular requirement and have basically filled out my application including all the necesary documents. I think I am going ahead with the match this year and see what happens... Thanks for your words of encouragement ... good luck on the match this year!

I revisited the NRMP site again and yes, ECFMG verified (step 1, CS, CK)... certification is up to the residency programs in where you are applying. Good luck on certification and good luck for the Match!

Good to know we are in the same boat .. yup your are right, verification by ROL and certification depends on when your residency program wants you to be certified... Just curious, how did you manage doing USCE doing your degree course?
