Certificate ECFMG Certificate NRMP Match

I apologize for all these doubts I've been having and I thank everyone of you has helped me so far.

I am filling out MyERAS with intentions to participate in 2013 Match.

I already have Step 1 and Step 2 CK; and will be taking Step 2 CS this upcoming month.

From what I have read, these are the exam components for ECFMG Certification.

I also read the diploma is required for Certification;

I am concerned because my graduation date is in May 2013.

Will this not let me participate in Rank, NRMP, Match??

You will be able to participate normally, but without being ECFMG certified, since your graduation date is in May 2013. And thus there is no way for you to be certified before this year's match which will end in March 2013.

However, it can greatly limit your chances in receiving interview calls and in matching, because many program directors fear that some IMGs may not be able to fulfill all the requirement for ECFMG certification. There's an additional important criteria for certification which is "verification of medical school credentials". This step is usually time-consuming (~2 months) and often fails due to med school officials not following the directions delivered to them by ECFMG.

You can try your luck this year, but your chances will not be the best. And it can mean wasted money and energy.

If I were you, I'd not apply this year, and spend some months obtaining US clinical experience and then apply next year.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

I just read this in the FAQ section in www.nrmp.com

"What does ECFMG Status NOT VERIFIED mean?

After registration opens for the Main Residency Match, the NRMP contacts ECFMG periodically up to and immediately after the rank order list deadline to verify whether graduates/students of international medical schools and Fifth Pathway program applicants have passed the required examinations. If your status is NOT VERIFIED, ECFMG has not yet confirmed that you have passed all examinations necessary for ECFMG certification. To be able to participate in the Main Residency Match, ECFMG must verify your examination status, NOT your ECFMG certification status by the rank order list deadline."

However, I am guessing it is up to the program whether or not I would match.

This another type of verification ECFMG does. It's not what I meant.

See this thread for more information:

Haisook is right, if you are not going to be ECFMG certified by late January programs will not rank you in February.

You may get interviews but they will not rank you.

So that will be waste of money and time.

In fact, I have a friend who had the same story as you are and he did not listen to me and he ended up wasting $10,000 and he was not ranked, he was able to match in the year after.

Change your plans and focus toward the 2013-2014 Matching season.

Thanks for replying. But the more I read on this subject, I keep understanding that the ECFMG Certificate is not necessary for participating in the Match

This is from ECFMG website:
National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

The NRMP matches applicants with available residency positions. You are required to register with NRMP by the NRMP Late Registration deadline in order to participate in the 2013 Match.
Additionally, you must meet NRMPs examination requirements, and your passing examination results must be available in time to participate. If you have not yet taken and passed USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS), please see the Step 2 CS Schedule for Reporting Results. You should also read this important announcement about registering for Step 2 CS. You are not required to have satisfied the medical education credential requirements for ECFMG Certification in order to participate in the Match."

Yes. I am not saying it's against the rules. I am saying that Program Directors will not rank you.

This is what several program directors told me and this is what I noticed with several applicants.

The only exception is that you have exceptionally strong connection with a program and they trust you enough that you will get the certificate by June and on that basis they rank you. But that's the exception, the typical case is that PDs and coordinators will not be interested in ranking you, the reason being is that they don't want to end up matching you and then comes July and you don't have a certificate then in that case they have to go through the hassle of finding someone else.
