Smile Clinical Procedure Skills Before Residency

Hi everyone,

I would like to know what basic clinical skills (eg. applying sutures, inserting IV lines...etc) an IMG is supposed to know before starting residency in the united states.

You are not expected to know anything. PDs do not expect you to know how to do IV or suturing or any other bedside procedure.

However, if you know these, it would be nice, so that you are not totally blank when you start residency.

Some bad programs in New York abuse their residents to do the junk stuff (inserting IVs, inserting catheters, ...etc) so if you are going to these programs you might want to get ready.

IV insertion is the nurse job in USA, it's not the doctor's job.

Suturing is of course needed if you are doing surgery, but for IM residents, it's not really needed.

Some other skills such as Central Line insertion, Lumbar puncture and others are required to be learned by the resident but you don't need to do them before you start your residency.

Thanks Sabio! And what about the electives/externships? Do I need to know any procedure before taking on my USCE and what would and would not impress the attending? I'd also like to take this opportunity to ask what degree of clinical aptitude should I posses before starting an elective, I mean to say what skills do the US med students acquire before their MS4 rotations other than the clinical examinations?
