Question Psychiatry Residency if No USCE

Hi all,

This is a question that's quite common among many of us, can you apply to psychiatry residency without USCE, or with USCE but in a field other than psychiatry?

Thanks.

Can you? Answer is Yes.
Would you get interviews? Answer is probably not.

Psychiatry PDs are more and more aware of the fact that IMGs are just using them as back up dumping application and they hate it.

Therefore, you should at least do a couple of short observerships with a couple of LoRs to increase your chances.

It's OK if you have been doing IM for the last 10 years for example, just make the last two months look like you were really interested in psychiatry and this will have huge impact on your chances of getting interviews.

Thanks for your reply.

Well I guess it's getting more difficult, then. Do you think that a well written personal statement can change things, if your USCE is not psychiatry? (you have USCE, it's just not psychiatry-related)? Or should I dismiss the idea all together?

Last year psychiatry had quite a number of places that went unfilled, you know. That's why I thought of it as a backup plan.

There's only one thing in my CV that might be related to psychiatry, which is a medical ethics publication (case report) in a national journal of my country, I wouldn't even think that a PD might consider it, but that's it.

Still the question though as to whether to apply or to dismiss the idea?
