Croatia Early without the CS or Later with CS?

Hi all,

I am a US IMG interested in applying to the 2013 match for Internal Med. I'm looking for advice on when to apply.

I graduated in July 2012. My step 1 score is a 215/91. My step 2 scores are pending and should be in by mid August. My CS scores are set to be released sometime in October.

My question is, Is it better to apply to programs early in September with only Step 1 and CK on my record, or is it better to wait until October and apply when I'm fully certified? What gives me better chances for landing interviews?

All advice is welcome, thank you

it really doesnt matter, since you did your schooling in carib, they all know whats up. apply eraly and late to those who require CS after . your chances are very good

Both situations are bad!
Applying without the CS and Applying late

I would probably choose to apply in October with the CS result in hands (if it is early October like before October 15)

If the results will come after October 15 then apply in September 15 without the CS results and try to contact the programs and tell them you will get the results in October.

Similar situation;;;If CS results come out on October 3, you are saying that applying on October is better than sep 15, WHY? Thank you step-taker

Thanks Step Taker,

My CS reporting schedule is between Oct 3 - Oct 31. So, not sure if it will be back before or after the 15th.. This is true for all students who took/will take CS between June 17th - August 25th.

I would imagine a good deal of applicants took their CS between June and August placing them in the same boat. Is this a correct assumption?

Also, how do you advise I contact the programs about me getting my CS in October? By phone?

There's a 99% chance that you will get your results on October 3rd, 2012. So don't worry about it and just wait until you get the results and apply.

How to contact?
I would prefer email.

Because some programs might filter you out if they see you don't have CS result.

I just called a Uni program and the residency coordinator said as long as everything else is ready, I should apply on Sept. 15th.

She said to apply as early as possible with a complete app. but when I asked about not having my CS in at that time, she said don't worry about it. She made it seem like CS wasn't that important for the Sept. 15th date. Just all the other stuff like Step 1, CK, LORs, etc. and she knew I was an IMG..

I called another community program and they said that they dont start sending out interviews until November, so applying anytime before then is fine.

Most places start sending out interviews in November, I wonder why does it matter if my app comes in Sept or in Oct? They're both before the November interview invitation dates.

Won't they look at everyone anyways?

Also, many programs accept late apps in Nov. with extra fees... Shouldn't anything before then be regarded as early then?

The issue is that many programs, specially community programs, start downloading applications in September. They keep downloading for 2-3 weeks, then once they have enough number (say for example 1000) then the other process starts which is the program director filtering through these applications to short list them then after that they send invitations (by then it might be late October or November). So in this example, if you don't send your application early in the season, you may miss their window (2-3 weeks downloading applications).

Of course, there's no rule. It varies from program to another. Community programs usually start earlier in downloading.

Also think about it. If you are a program coordinator and by September 30th 2012 you already downloaded 1000 applications, why would you work more! You'll say OK that's enough, let's filter them.

In the case of University of programs, they are usually more organized and they wait until November to look at applications this is because AMGs do not apply crazily early in September like IMGs. So Universities take their time and they are not in a hurry.

There's another change this year. No prematches. This means that low profile community programs that used to fool IMGs with early prematch can no longer do it and therefore they maybe much more relaxed this year and they may not start downloading until mid to late October.

Yes. She will tell you "Oh, no problem don't worry about the CS".

But again, put yourself in her shoes. Come September 30th and you applied without CS results and Zillion other IMGs applied with CS results in hand, whom do you think she'll send for interview!!

Ok, thanks again Step Taker.

There was just one misinfo in this thread, 98-99% of CS reporting won't be on Oct 3 but actually later in October.

For those who took CS between June 17-August 25 2012.

98-99% of CS results will be reported by the 3rd wednesday of the reporting period Oct. 3 - Oct. 31. That actually correlates to October 22nd..

http://www.usmle.org/step-2-cs/#reporting

So the real question is whether to apply without CS on Sept 15. or applying on Oct. 22 with the CS.

If all you say is true, It's pretty ridiculous how PD's say you have 3 months to apply, while in reality they mean 3 weeks. I don't get their motive..

Yes. You are right, sorry for the wrong info. 99% in Third Week.

But did they say what percentage on the first day! I bet it's close to 95%

Thanks once again Step Taker,

There's just one misinfo on this thread. 98-99% of reports will be back by the 3rd Wednesday of the Oct.3 - Oct. 31 reporting schedule not on Oct. 3. That actually correlates with October 22nd.

So, the real question is, applying without CS on Sept. 15 or applying with CS on Oct. 22. or even later if you're that unluckiest 1%.

Should I wait until Oct. 15th for CS results and if they're not in by then, just send in what I have and let them know that results will be in within the next week or 2?

Most of the information you read in residency program websites and from program coordinator phone calls are actually geared toward the US graduate. For them, it's true that they have 3 months.

Even for IMGs, it's also true that you have until December or even January to apply.

But What am talking here is how to maximize your chances and how to be perfect and utilize your full opportunity.

There's no rule that says if you apply in November you won't be picked up but what am telling you here is an insider perspective as I know how residency programs operate.
