Question How about psychiatry for IMGs?

Is it a good idea to apply to psychiatry as a backup to IM though I have no relevant experience in it? I only have USCE in IM and corresponding LoRs.

And is it easier to get into than family medicine?

What do you think?

don't have idea about psych. but with FM, it depends on 2 things: visa & year of grad. most programs only accept GC holders. if yr of grad >2yrs, most programs require 6-12mos of US training (transitional or prelim, not extern/observerships). trend of FM as back-up for imgs is slowly coming to end, as PDs now knew that FM are just back-ups so they tried to increase their criteria up a notch.
oncoming trend w/c is easier to match for img is peds. see you there.
trend varies from time to time. for us imgs, impt thing is we must be that versatile & not too picky with regards to our specialty of choice if we wanna get into US residency.
hope this helps.

Can you make it into Peds if your USCE is NOT peds-related??
And how should you apply? Top tiers or moderates or low?

This is very strange, the first time to know that USCE is worthless. Does anyone have more feedback to share?

is not worthless, but if you do an IM USCE how you going to spin and say you like peds. Also There are programs that require no USCE for Peds but is a battle of Carib vs Australian Students for it.

If you did an USCE in IM apply IM.

If you did it in FM you can use it in PEDS, but again if your going to go for peds for your back up as this looks like the case, if not you would have done peds, then dont, save your money. PEDS is competitive this year, trust me. But is your money, all the power to you.

But I understand you need to apply to everything, so do it, apply. My husband is doing that too, so are his classmates, like 800 people applying to over 500 programs each, one guy he knows is applying to 1000 Programs. Some on in his school had over 33 interviews last year. Is like a race who gets the most interviews. I think is about that one program thats, it... just one program...., I am waiting for my Step 2 CK result and doing more IM USCE and a research for now. But Ill inform you all more on this matter. or anything else.

Default psy

The NRMP says that for psychiatry 55.1% of residency positions were filled by American graduates whereas in another website it ways that only 5.1% are filled by IMGs. Can anyone please clarify that? Thanks in advance.

I think for psychiatry, relevant exp matters. I applied to alot of psych programs but did not get any interviews from any psych program.

Tammy13 , did the programs that you apply to have eligibility criteria stating that they require Psychiatry USCE?

Default You just need to prove it s not a backup

When u apply to peds, psychiatry and FM
Specially if u don't have any us or out of us experience relevantly
U have to convince the program by ur personal statement and again during the IV
It s a matter of luck and the mood of the PD
But if u have home country experience,US LOr or publications relevant to ur application tht d be great
