Embarrassed How to overcome a low step 1 score

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I wish I had heard about it when I was preparing for step 1. I really need some honest advice about how to overcome my poor step 1 score of 202/77.

Here's my story
I am an IMG with no green card or electives, I prepared for step 1 on and off for a year and ultimately gave the exam after an my NBME score came out to be 220, I thought my exam was easier than NBME 13 and I might as well score around 230, I dont know what went wrong, but silly mistakes (even if a few) can make you pay heavily in terms of your score. Plus after the actual exam for the first time in my whole preparation I was confident about my behavioral science answers but when the score report came, I was shocked to see that my performance was lowest in it along with genetics.

Anyways..I know I can't change what happened, I have to move on..but I am pretty confused at this moment because I have heard that most programs (leaving aside the competitive one) dont even look at ur application if the score is below 210, still I am thinking of not quitting and am planning to give my 100% to step 2 ck..(which was lacking in my step 1 prep, may be I underestimated the importance of a good score or whatever)

my only worry is even if i do some USCE, research and get decent step 2 and step 3 scores how many years will it take for me to get into residency?

If its going to take 2-3 years more and still things will be uncertain, what should I be doing ideally? because I am not independent and am answerable to my parents who are supporting me right now and I had a hard time convincing them for usmle

Please guide me....

I seriously do not know what to do now

Thanks

nothing is impossible, Hard yes but not impossible.

You need to get at least 12 month of USCE and research at a top notch Uiniversity here in USA.

250+ on stp 2 CK, pass CS on first attempt and Step 3 on first attempts.

then you have a shot for some NY, MA IMG friendly programs.

YES!!!.. if he knows how, your husband could rub elbows with the PDs and asst PDs. ever heard of the saying, "connections are the best credentials"
i know one img who only got ave step1 score, no usce, no research and got interview & match in a UCLA program

btw my score is 208 we will get match, stay positive.

do good in ck, do USCE, do research, apply many(your hubby can save for the cost)..

Honestly

My husband took me on his clinical rotations, he bought me Malpractise and I did Peds, IM, OBGYN, Surgery, Ortho, radiology and family medicine rotations with him.

Other rotations the hospitals didnt allow it and the doctors didnt want some one extra.

its hard for IM but not impossible. Peds & FM have lower score requiremnts but FM are for those with GC/permanent resident or >6mos USCE. just focus on your ck first(aim for 230+) then cs. Then i suggest borrowing money from your US relatives & spend for observerships/externships & also for applying many many programs. but still having USCE doesnt guarantee a match so better think about that b4 borrowing. u need a big sum, bout >5-10K..
hope this helps.

i m in the same situation..but recently started with step 2 ck preparation..i asked a lot of people for advice and believe me 90% of them told me to score good on ck first..and then go for research or externships for atleast 7-8 months and apply widely..there are many programs ( especially community ones) whose requirement is a score of 200 plus, so we're still on the safer side..and seriously at this point of time getting into university or community programs is essentially the same thing for me..so, first get a good score on ck by preparing in the right way and try side by side to get into electives or research..moreover,u have relatives in u.s so look at it as an added advantage..

d best thing for u is to contact seniors from ur college who r doing residency in US as they'll already be having connections..i havent started searching for clinical experience yet but am planning to talk to a few seniors of mine and then see exactly where to apply..and its good to hear dat u've started with ck..dont worry..i'll let u know how to go about it....

Hello you guys from 2012.
I really wanna know where you guys are now?
How was the match? Where did you guys match with the low scores?
I'm in the same boat from 2014. Need encouragement. My score step 1 212, CS pass first attempt, preparing for CK. Worked as a research associate for more than an year in my country, and 2 publications. 2 month observership in usa.
Please tell me about yourselves.
I hope I hear from you guys.
Waiting.
