Question Applying to a program but with an LOR (USCE) not in the same specialty

Hello there!

If you could kindly help me with these inquiries.

I want to apply to EM but I have had USCE in surgery with an LOR. I am wondering if that would be helpful to me or not.

If I attend an observership at a certain hospital but I also want to apply to different locations, is it alright that I ask the Program Director I worked with to contact the PD of another center as a recommendation? or is that considered not alright.

And one more thing, If I had USCE at a certain geographical location but I want to apply to programs at different locations is that okay? or is it preferred to have the USCE at the place I want to apply to.

Thanks a lot!
Abdullah.

Surgery is good thing for EM. but try to get an EM letter from some where, back home as soon as possible. Most likely you will end up with way more interviews in Surgery and maybe non in EM.

Thank you for your response!

The LOR I got for Surgery is through an observership I attended in the US. However, I do have EM LORs from my home country.

My only interest is EM. I have no interest in any other specialty.

Yes. You can.
But you have to ask the author to mention in the LoR that he's recommending you for EM not surgery and you should also specify the specialty of the LoR in OASIS and ERAS.
It would have been much stronger if you had an EM LoR, but an LoR from a surgeon is still OK.

Yes. That's alright. The healthcare system is the same across all USA, they all have the same AMA, CDC, FDA, AAMC, ...etc

It depends on how strong is your relationship with the PD you worked with and it also depends on that PD's personality, some they'll say oh yes, let me call him for you, some will say sorry I can't do that.
In general, if you have strong relationship with the PD you worked with then it's a good idea to try and ask him, that's OK in USA, connections are always utilized.

'you should also specify the specialty of the LoR in OASIS and ERAS' : dear sabio do we have to specify the specialty in eras? i thought we do that fro our convenience so that we those who are applying for more than on e specialty do not mix up the lor. i did not mention the specialties before finalizing, is this okay?

Well I didn't ask the surgeon who wrote me the LOR to specifiy it to EM. It just states at the end something like: I highly recommend him to your residency program. Is that okay?

And by the way, I have already finalized that author.

I did want to add that EM LOR's are sLOR's, so they aren't the regular LOR's. They are more of a questionnaire type, and therefore don't leave anything subjective for your attending.

Because you don't have it, its okay to submit what you have. But its better to know.
