go to freida-ama (forgot exact address), search engine for programs. select a program, you'll see their web address. there you can see criteria (scores, vvisa, vetc) and current residents & alumnis. if it says: 1) we dont sponsor visa 2) current residents/alumnis are from Caribbean schools, no one from Asia or middle east 3) required score is this ###, then it means its not img-friendly and better save your $25 to some other programs.

military hospitals are for us citizen only.

hope this helps.

I wouldn't suggest wasting your money for military programs.

I visited a US Army recruitment center recently, and explained my situation as a GC/IMG/Still in school applying for residency. They said "internal" cycling puts first officers from Army/Naval/AF (US med school seniors) at the top of the pile, then other US grads.

He went on to say that even US DO's aren't ranked, unless they have specific experience in the military or a division of the armed forces.

What they're saying is that THEY wont sponsor your visa's. If you can get sponsored by the ECFMG you can apply. I haven't heard of the ECFMG sponsoring visa's. Lets see what one of the mods says.

it means you can apply if you have a J1 visa, meaning you got it for yourself w/o involvement of the hospital.
ecfmg acts as our Dean's office, checking if our credentials are legit & if it closely matches w/ the US med school curriculum. so i don't think they sponsor visa. i haven't heard of them sponsoring or maybe i just haven't read about it.

It's the ECFMG who are responsible for sponsoring ALL J1 visas, FOR ALL IMG's. When you are accepted to a Residency program, your program co-ordinates with the ECFMG to arrange your visa. So, if a program says they 'sponsor' J1 visa, they actually mean the ECFMG. END OF STORY.

So, what happens in the case of an IMG with a green card? The IMG friendly hospitals sponsor visa, so that's not really a BIG advantage. And what are those hospitals that don't sponsor visa? Us, green card holders but IMGs need to know that piece of info; we need to get the edge in any way possible for the upcoming match.

There are some programs that only take GC holders or US citizens and they will tell you on their web site. I don't remember which ones but there are a few out there. Also, I don't know if that's of advantage or not.

Default Visa status

Freida will show which programs accept J1 and H1B. Those that don't only accept GC or US citizens.

If you go to program's websites, you'll find information and its usually explained more clearly than FREIDA. MANY FM progs only take US citizens/GC holders. Even if they take IMGs, its usually US IMGs, and most of them require at least 6-12mths of USCE, which is another way of them ruling out non US IMGs.
The information is all there, it takes work to create your own specific list unique to you. Its taken me 2 weeks+ on mine, and it took my hubby the same amount of time on his as well.

@mitsua, like I stated, you'll also have to do your own research. No one is going to give up that information, as they too see those as hidden gems and the less people who are aware of it, the better.
