Arrow Number of Programs I should Apply to??

Hey Guys, i need help about the number of programs i should be applying to for the 2013 match..just need a rough idea..My credentials are

US citizen IMG, YOG 2011
Step1 - 254
Step2 - 261
CS - Pass
(all in 1st attempt)
USCE - 2 months electives in hospitals, 13 months externship in private clinics in Brooklyn
LORs - total 6, 5 from US physicians, 1 from Dean of medicine of medical school

so how many programs should i go for? 100? 150? or 200?

Dude, you are by definition, the IDEAL IMG. I would not worry at all! i don't see any deficiency in your application.

Shima, thank you for your reply. Yes, I have heard that NY programs are very IMG friendly, and since I am living in NY these days, i guess it would be easy for me if i get interviews here. I am not sure if i wanna apply for a transitional year though.

Warning! Great credentials, but be cautious...

Although your credentials are great, don't fall in the trap most NY programs have. Most NY programs, especially community ones, prefer applicants who show commitment to service and are more likely to continue in their programs as hospitalists, rather than move off to somewhere else to seek fellowship. What makes things worse is that there has been a trend where residents leave the program after completing their first year, taking advantage of having had a full year of USCE, and then switch to a better program. That's why NY program directors are especially suspicious of excellent candidates, because they are more likely to do exactly that.

It's then very important to show your commitment to the program in the interview and avoid talking about a fellowship (unless may be it's available in-house and is fairly easy to get; not cardiology for instance).

I suggest you apply to 150-200 programs.

thank you, that was a great piece of advice.
Btw, i won't be ranking the NY programs on the top of my list. I would probably prefer a less crowded area I had the same estimate about program number, 150-200. Thanks again.
