Surgery The Risks of Preliminary Surgery Residency

Hi all,

From I what got from the experiences of people in previous matches, when it comes to IM, it is NOT advised to apply to both prelim and categorical in the same program, but for surgery it is actually ADVISABLE to do so..

Now what I have in mind is, If you apply to prelim and cat in the same program for surgery, doesn't that mean you are actually giving the green light to the program to put you in a prelim program and never consider you for cat?

I mean, if your goal is cat, wouldn't applying to prelim give the program the idea that you are actually WILLING to accept prelim, which will make them automatically offer you ONLY prelim, considering how competitive cat surgery is?

I need you to share your ideas and experiences, people.

apply both. cat surg are usually given to AMGs, if theres available spot left then they give it to carrib grads and then IMGs. not unless you have 260+ scores then you got decent chance for cat even if ur img. so to be safe, IMGs apply to both rather than not matching at all.
my classmate (US IMG, scores 250s, USCE in surg) wasnt able to get cat surg. but he got in prelim-surg. i know an img got 15-20 IVs for surg in 100 programs applied, hes score was 270s.

Thanks for your input. However, the thread's idea is not about the chances in surgery, we all know how competitive it is. And for the record, cat surgery is VERY competitive, but I've seen people match in it last year, some had GC, some had solid research, some had super LoRs, others (like your friend) had 260+ scores. What I meant is another point, about those who were offered interviews were automatically put in the prelim track, because they applied to both. Once you show your willingness for prelim, it means you won't be offered a cat position ever, right?

i see. i got your point.
no.. i think they were put on prelim tracks not because they applied to both, but because there was a much preferable applicant than them. in surgery, on the ranking list, imgs are on the very bottom or never rank at all. so cat surg wud be filled out with amgs then carribs, b4 an img cud have a chance.
also in surgery, they never see applying to prelims as something of disinterest to the specialty (not like IM). in fact, most imgs i knew who got into surg underwent prelims first or they were practicing surgeons in their country. thats what my AMG cuzin told me, but who knows he may be wrong.
am doing rotation now so i'll ask some of my co-clerks for this. i'll get back to you if i learn something..

Every year the trend is different. Ultimately you have to look out for your own good. I have 227 in step 1 and CS passed but I am applying for IM and prelim surgery. I do want to do surgery and it is my dream to be a surgeon. But for IMGs the situation is different. There is no harm in trying and maybe if I match into Prelim surg well and good. But I don't want to feel later on that I didn't try. There have been cases where people have lucked out and gotten into the Specialty of their choice. Do what you have feel is right as ultimately you will be interviewing and not others for you. So do what is best for you.

hey, was able to ask some carrib grads..
yes, most apply to both but since cat surg is very competitive so most img only get match in prelim. they had seniors doing surg and said some PDs wud rather leave the position blank than put an img in it. basically, cat surg is not IMG friendly. that's how ironic it is..
IMO apply both & apply more. good luck man. hope you get in..
