Question Preliminary residency for IM seekers

My target is IM residency
If I choose prelim in addition to categorical
Will it be a wise step?
Some say it s more competitive
Some say u ll have to start a 3 yr residency again after that
But it s better than nothing and maybe one or two places will be free?
At least it may help but will it hurt?

They say prelim filled by Resident of subspecialities
I mean one or two spots not filled by anyone so we can fill it

Prelim = Designed for people pursuing residency's that require internship year.

Ex. Radiology.

You'll face fierce competition for this because AMG's want this/need this to pursue rads.

They are always filled 100% by those subspecialities resident?
And is the idea of just applying reasonable ?

Not always, theres never a 100% chance with anything.

"reasonable" depends on your financial condition. If you've got the green, then sure. Otherwise if you're on a budget, I wouldn't recommend. Im going to be applying to IM, but have strictly avoided all prelim programs for the reasons I mentioned above.

Default Hey

I heard that if program has both preliminary and categorical, you can apply in both position with same prize.

It may sound funny , I still want to ask it again!!!!

Hi, I am a recent graduate ( 2011 April) and came to USA in June 2011 on family based worked permit visa. I worked in a gas station and a RESTURANT as a part time for my financial support for around 6 months. I finished my steps ( 1, 2 ck & cs in may 2012) and then 3 months clinical rotations in a hospital. Right now I am engaged in a clinical research. I am wondering if I should include the work in gas station and RESTURANT in my ERAS application, because if I don't, there will be a gap of almost one whole year. Please give me your views if I should include it in ERAS or not? Please step taker or somebody truly help me decide! Thank you !

Depends, prelim is better than nothing.

But then again, after prelim year is done, you are back to square one, without a residency. Sure you've got more USCE, but you're still applying through the ERAS/NRMP again and hoping to match somewhere into a categorical 3 year IM program.
