what i have been told is that a personal statement should be around 500- 600 words, that actually defines you. Cut all the rhetorical crap and do not be too repetitive. Have a strong opening paragraph as it is usually what most pd's will read as they have to go through a large no of ps. But do not ignore the main body of the ps as it will define most of your personality and will form the basis for your interview.

In short: keep it short and powerful.

Anyone willing to correct me, please do it as i am no expert...

What ashake said is what a PD who is on SDN forums says. Mine fits that, and mine is 968 words, and "it tells my story", so to speak.
Your personal statement shouldnt be like everyone else's own. The PD goes through thousands, but they should read this and think "hmmm, interesting person". Some people I know, despite their low scores, were able to get IVs because the PD was captivated by their PS. What this shows is that despite what many believe, a great PS can indeed help you, so make it count! Write your own PS, because no one knows your story better than you, and you can answer questions posed at you at the IV, about what you've written.

I'd say "rhetorical" crap is a subjective thing. What you might think is important the PD might not, and viz versa.
