Certificate Two LoRs by the same Letter Writer!

Is it ok to request 2 LOR from the same letter writer?
LOR # 1 -> specifying the specialty
LOR # 2 -> could be "general" in order to apply to a back-up plan ?

Thanks

Correct Answer

Yes you can . I have done that for all of my letters. you have to send them two requests and that is how two letters will be uploaded by one person.

Stop Stop

Never do that!

That's redundant and extremely unprofessional.

The only exception is if that letter writer is writing for you two different LoRs for two different specialties, in that case only it's OK, because then the two residency programs won't know that you used the same author for two LoRs.

The best way to do that is that you ASK your letter writer if it is okay with him to write two letters for you, then you send him two letter requests ( you can name each request as you like , for example : IM or general)
The letter writer would be able to see the name of your email request but NOT the program.
For extra safety, in case you have waived your rights , folks at Eras are checking whether your letter writer has specified the specialty that you mentioned or any other possible errors!
