Fire Thread 2013 Family Medicine Residency Matching Applicants

I didn't notice a thread for this group. Thought i'd start it up.

Hopefully applicants can gather here like the other threads and post stats etc.

My stats:

School: Carrib-IMG
Scores:
Step 1 - 222 (1st try)
Step 2 CS - Passed (1st try)
Step 2 CK - Pending
USCE: "72" Months USCE in ACGME programs
Visa Status: No Visa Needed
YOG: Haven't Graduated Yet
LOR's: 4 US LOR's - 2 from PD's (None of which are uploaded onto MyERAS - FML)

Note: I haven't applied to family as a backup, I actually really liked it during my rotations.

For history, check

Come one Observership and Research , some programs count those towards USCE.

For instance Northern Iowa doesnt
Central Iowa does, but is 2 year cut off.

I am Canadian too, but how is that you don't require Visa for residency. I think Medical residency is an exception to the norm for visa issues for Canadians coming to US ???

Congrats. As Shima said your Visa status and USCEs are a big plus. Way to go. I am sure you will receive more.

no. not even rejection or acknowledges. i thought they were suppose to be the friendliest around.
but i've read an article somewhere (sorry forgot link) that 20% don't start reviewing till release of MSPE, so might it be the reason.

it depends on the case. i knew a lot of old imgs (30s-40s) who got into FM, previously GS & internist in my country.
right now, FM is so sensitive with one's passion for the specialty. years past & majority of programs realized that FM is made as a back-up specialty for majority of IMGs. that's why it really depends if one's application & interest is really geared for FM. a lot of us are applying for FM but then have IM USCE and an IM sounding PS.
don't lose hope. if your application was really passionate about FM, you will have your chance.

@ Shima unfortrunatly its a volunteer job but hey beggers cant be choosers right? I basically went to the hospital and went to each research department and asked them if they were looking for anyone to help. I had a copy of my CV with me and I passed it around everywhere.

@doc.mav thanks for the encouragement and yeah Visa status is an important issue with alot of programs but still its not the only issue they look at.

As for NY programs I got a rejection from South Nassau Communities Hospital today so they are sending them out it seems

YOG: 2013
Step 1: 190(attempts)
Step 2: 205
Visa status: US citizen
LORs: 5 US, 2 from known physicians in med circle
USCE: 96 wks (all hands on clerkships)
Other Degrees: 2 US Masters, 1 US BS
Research/Work: Yrs of US medical research at top US institutions with several publications/posters and Natl award, Loads of volunteer, community involvement and Work in the health field.
Network: Multiple contacts and most importantly GOD
Negatives: Step 1 failures, Basic Science grades, due to personal issues, all explained in my PS, which was my personal story about growth.

6 FM rejections so far, expecting app season to kick off for me when MSPE is released Monday. I'll also be adding about 30-50 more FM progs to my already long list in the next week+. Progs I'll be adding are more far reaching ones. Made my own list, which has been extremely helpful, didnt get filtered out /rejected by 1 prog that filtered folks with higher scores last week.

Ok I'm mad about Wright st and its not even meJust because I know who they've selected in the past.

A fam member asked for my AAMC #, to pass onto a FM PD at a mid tier uni prog (sorry cant and wont say the name for obvious reasons), who is a buddy, and I see they checked my usmle transcript on friday, after not updating since sep 15. I'm praying for an IV email from them soon.

The fam member has helped others get a position in the past, and I know will push hard to also make sure I am highly ranked. Not a fan of the prog, cause they have a low boards pass rate and not much teaching experience, from what I hear, but ultimately the goal is to get matched somewhere!

WV, WI, Michigan U.

It was like a questioner on why us, who are you, what you did, explain all your clinical rotations up to now. My husband thinks maybe he put the wrong AAMC number, maybe he didnt answer something wrong. This is so weird.

Does that mean we should carry info about all the programs all the time............that's quite a tough thing...............or do they first ask for convenient time for Phone/skype IV?

see thats the thing, no convient time for us, they took my husband by a surprise, fortuntly he has info on al the programs on his PC, he made a excell sheet.

he used that, but for the email part is a 4 hour return of email.

Also they send a private email to his account, not a eras one.

in the end of the email of two of programs it stated,

you will get disqualiffied as a resident if info you have provided is not true and we figure it out in the future.

Its like a funny feeling

this increases the stress even more. there's a lot of programs. even if one reads, it will be hard to take note of the things you like from them.

i guess they're really going over the top to determine which candidates really wants FM. as they know imgs usually apply to FM as their back-up & not their main interest.

best of luck to your husband.

I am pretty sure you will do well, dont stress. these programs have like 6% IMG's.

But i think this year FM is being careful not to go under matched. since there is no prematch and dont want people who used FM as back up. but you will get IV by end of NOV from others. trust me on this. I been right up to now. 1 month from now, youll have over 7 IV for sure.

I think u'll end up matching if u apply broadly and research your progs. Also connections are vital! So use them if u have them, that's what I'm doing.

if you have rotated in ACGME hospitals for clinical rotations you should have a lot of contacts.

you chances are super High, I mean SUPER high.

I am assuming you dont require a Visa.

make sure you have applied to all the NY programs in FM that dont care for failures. Look your school has a lot of connections, look at the list where they got matched in NY, apply there, apply everywhere

Now is too early for IV, you will get IV in 2-3 weeks. so dont stress.

TRUST ME, in 3 weeks you be happy lots of IV.

One of my husbands best friends went to AUA, he has 75/79/CS all 2nd attempt, matched in NY last year in Buffalo area. So dont worry.

Also when did you apply, Sept 15th. if so give it some time another 24 days.

I wouldnt either. Personally I think people should only post where rejections came from and not IVs, but its amazing how many ppl on another nameless forum think otherwise. Folks even have posts, not just stating the prog names, but what dates the IVs are...smh!!!! Folks have posts seeking out others who also have IVs at the same prog, so they can practice. Like for real??? Practice, so you can have the same answers to random questions, so it can sound like a memorized script, not smart thinking in any way.

just did my 1st FM interview.
the questions are pretty simple & just the usual ones we hear. basically aimed to know you better. why FM, why this program, tell me about you, etc.
based on how i answered, am not expecting much from them. i was stuttering, was obviously nervous & jittery coz PD was kinda strict (pd: "uh-huh, what else?, anything more?)
btw no need to memorize a script or something, questions are not that hard as you think if one is calm. IT IS really impt to be calm, keep a great composure and be honest all throughout.

ricky I hope you get IV, but these days FM is becoming harder to get, PD are recognizing FM is being used as a back up and not a lot of people getting IV.

I have noticed the ones who do get IV have solid USCE > 6-12 month, and not observership, actual electives, medical school rotations or externship in USA.

can anyone please comment why I'm not getting any response at all - even a single rejection? I can understand that I'm not getting any IV's but this is really weird. I'm not even getting rejections from places from where other applicants are getting IV's/rejections. It's so frustrating!! I applied on Sept. 19th.

What are your stats?

Was your application complete when you applied?

USCE 1 month observer-ship- Ophthalmology at UCLA
completing a masters in health administration in Australia.

My friend, your stats are deceiving for FM, your good for IM but for FM your very weak. [no FM observership/USCE for at least 6 month]

Look I tell you this, dont take it the wrong way, Family Medicine will not risk giving you IV at this stage,

I hope you applied to all NY, MAss, Cali programs. others will require at least 6 to 12 month USCE.

This week has been extremely slow.

Only got 1, that too haven't heard back from to confirm the date.

Lets hope we end this week on a high note.

Also: IM IV virginity has yet to be broken. Sigh.

Hi Pricsck, I understand right now its a difficult time for you, this match has alot of us stress. For programs, did you apply to all the Family medicine places that people have matched into from AUA and did u research which ones don't mind 2nd attempts on Steps. Hope things turn around for you and interviews come through. all the best. As far as step 3 prep, I would say focus on sealing in knowledge from previous steps and doing clinical work (continuing to volunteer at FM clinic) or whichever hospital.

just got a surprise call from a PD of a program in south of chicago or illinois. it got me so nervous (coz i was caught off-guard) i wasn't able to get the program name & director. He was askin me questions about my interest & passion for FM. good thing he invited me after for personal IV.

these FM programs are really making sure your heart is into FM by doing these sudden phone IVs. why do they just send emails like all other programs.

I think the prob are he needs a visa and he posted this earlier "USCE: 1.5 months 1 US lor while other 3 from home country."

Many FM progs want US/GC and many want at least 3-6mths USCE

hello guys. wanna share another IV experience i had.

as we know, we shouldn't tell or we can lie if we were asked about if we did apply to other specialties aside from FM in their institution. this time, i don't feel like lyin coz the PDs were so nice. so i wasn't able to get hold of myself & was able to tell them the truth that i have applied to IM also (but i gave a justification for it). & luckily for me, after lunch there was a CPC conference and to my surprise it was both for FM & IM. and with it, the FM & IM PDs are buddies. faculties of both dep't sat around one area and were chatting. so i guess it was a blessing i told the truth.

IMO, do watch out what you answer for those programs w/ IM coz you never know. hope this helps you guys in some way.
