Question How does NRMP ranking process work?

Hi,

I know it's early for this, but I would still like to know!

Can someone please explain to me how this rank list works? If a person has 7-10 interviews, and at the end they don't match, why is that? Do they not rank the programs correctly, or the programs don't rank them?

Thank you!

It means none of the 7-10 places that they interviewed ranked them high enough to match.

Prog A may have 7 spots and rank 25 people
Prog B may have 10 spots and rank 30 people.

You may rank Prog A #1 and Prog B #2
Prog A ranks you alright, but ranks you #20
Prog B also ranks you, but ranks you #20

Prog A and B are top places, so everyone else also ranks them as #1 or 2 Including those whom they ranked higher than you!

Prog A may end up going down to #15, in order to fill up its spots
Prog B may end up going down to #15 in order to fill up

You were ranked, but unfortunately way down the list, that it never got to you cause of the more highly competitive ones ranked higher, who also ranked them high.

You lose out...unmatched.

Its highly unlikely that someone would interview at 7-10 places and end up unmatched, but it does happen. Its more common with people who only interview at 1-5 places though.

So it doesnt matter that you get ranked, but you get ranked high enough, in the top 10-15, to be sure of securing a spot in any program!

Lena is on the money, but short form....

If you had 10 IV and you ranked all of them and didnt match it means
A) they did not rank you
B) they did not rank you high enough
C) they forgot to rank you
