Calendar My plan ... Can I make it in 2012?

Hey all
I am a senior medical student and I am now preparing for step 1 .. I have a plan on when I am going to schedule the rest of my exams and get the match ( hopefully ), so please I need your help on this ... Is my plan realistic ?

I am planning to have step 1 done in late Jan 2011 ... then I am planning to have two months elective training in USA ( Feb and Mar ) during which I will schedule my CS exam .. then I have to get back to my home country where I'll finish studying for my last year final exams ( and for CK exam - our finals and CK exam material are the same ) ..

I will finish my university final exams by the start of June 2011 ... and I will continue studying for step 2 CK , and I will do the CK exam by mid Aug 2011 ( with a whole studying time of 3.5 months ) for CK ... then I 'll start applying for interviews ( my CK results will be pending )

what do u think?
Do i have a good chance for an Internal medicine match in 2012 if I have a good results in step 1?
( To sum up, I 'll apply for interviews in IMG friendly programs by the end of Aug 2011, with my CS and step 1 results ready and CK results pending ... I will be a very fresh graduate - just two months earlier, with a 2 months period USA clinical experience, USA and local LOR and some research experience )

I know it's somehow confusing ... but please help me if you can

Thumbs Up Great plan

This is a perfect and ideal plan.

Applying to the match so early after graduation will greatly enhance your chances of getting interviews.

Fresh grads can get IM match with scores as low as 85, but am not saying this to tell you to aim for low scores you should aim for the highest scores possible but am just informing you of the reality.

Good luck with you plans and wishing you a great match in 2012.

Sounds good plan.
Just be careful with the CS, I think doing electives and CS at the same time in two months is a little bit unrealistic

Why not ? I am planning to that too.
I thought it would be very useful to get training then get the CS
Where is the problem ?

Thank you all

@GNND85 : why not? many of my friends did it .. none of them failed : so I guess it is affordable

@rasheed : many thanks for your informative reply, I have a couple of questions though, I hope you or any other member can help me :

- is it a good idea to apply to the interviews as late as the last few days of Aug? I heard that it's better to apply to interviews as early as you can

- is it a good idea to apply to interviews with my CK score still pending ?

- if i don't match for 2012 match for whatever reason, will this affect my chances for 2013 match?

- the hospital at which I am doing my elective is very IMG friendly .. what are the odds that my elective there would help me get a prematch or a match in this hospital? is there anything I can do during my elective to increase my chances in this hospital ?

Problem is with time. 2 months is not enough to do both. It should be at least 4 months. 2 months for the electives and 2 months for the CS prep practicing cases with a partner and memorizing FA.

Application starts in September 1st. So if you can do the CK in early August you'll most probably get the CK results in the first week of September and then you'd apply fully ECFMG certified which gives you an added advantage. However, most of the programs wouldn't mind you with a pending CK results as interviews starts no earlier than October and by the time of the interviews you'd have the CK results ready.

I wouldn't say so. You will still be a fresh graduate.

Oh yes. That's your biggest opportunity to make connections and take LoRs and they will very likely take you as a resident later when you apply.

You have three cut offs for what's regarded a fresh in the eyes of residency programs in the US:
  • One year (few programs)
  • Three years (several programs)
  • Five years (many progams)
  • Ten year (few programs, specially community programs)
