Smile Hope for all IMG applicants!

This is excellent news if you have read this official aamc document

https://www.aamc.org/download/100598...udiesnov09.pdf

There is going to be an acute shortage of most specialists, especially general surgeons commencing 2015-2020.

So, even if someone gets into a surgical (or any other) prelim, there is certainly going to be an increase in the number of training positions by the time one finishes PGY-1, nationwide.

So, be encouraged and grab any opportunity as the time is ripe!

Not true. This is old news, bill has been stalling in DC for a while.
US med schls enrollment went up cause of the creation of many schls in the past few years.
It doesnt mean IMGs will get anything...

No need for false hope based on an old article. Just do you and let God take you forward.

Cause I have been around the block for years, and the link is from 2009, even though now its a dead link.

I found a link here
https://www.aamc.org/download/150584..._factsheet.pdf

Yes. It's old.
But that doesn't matter because the calculation still holds. It's projecting that there will be extreme shortages starting the years 2015 (3 years from now).
They are saying that residency slots should be increased (they did not say med school slots).
So if they get their recommendation to policy makers, then they might increase the residency slot and if that happen then I think it would be good news for IMGs as AMGs have no problem matching it's the IMGs who are having problems.

they may not say in this article but a LOT of new med schools have been started and some say in a couple of years IMGs will have NO role in the US healthcare..that is the goal, at least. The US does not like to depend on other countries in any sense..:-)

Few points for you to remember:
  1. 25% of US doctors are IMGs.
  2. The ECFMG is an expanding institute with new rising services such as the ECHO that they started recently.
  3. Having IMGs does not mean depending on other countries.
  4. IMGs willing to work in rural and primary care areas more than Americans and this is perfect for the new Obamacare.
  5. IMG cost America less than the AMG.
  6. America is the land of immigrants since Thomas Jefferson and until today.

That's hardly the point. In 4 years' time there will be more AMGs graduating than residency positions. Obamacare or not, residency positions will remain approximately the same for the foreseeable future (unless congress does something about this, but highly unlikely given the economic climate). Do not use the past as an argumentative point as things are in motion in the present which will radically change the future.

Also, osteopathy schools have DOUBLED enrollment. Many U.S. students are still going to the Caribbean.

The future is bleak. You can deny this. You can let your optimism cloud your judgement. That is your problem. In 4 years' time, any IMG who doesn't have a perfect application will, at most, get a residency position in the middle of nowhere in a dreadful programme. At most. Best case scenario.
