Hi.

Ophthalmology is one of the most competitive specialties here.

Here is what I think about how to improve one's chance to get in there:

- Have extra high USMLE scores made from the 1st attempt. Many programs do not consider IMGs with scores below 245.
- US clinical experience in Ophthalmology would be a great help. The easiest way I think are observerships or externships. Better way - to do a fellowship in one of the Ophth. subspecialties prior residency. Some programs offer fellowships for IMGs without US Board Certification.
- US LoRs.
- Research experience and Publications.

There is a separate Match for Ophthalmology (sfmatch.com) which you need to apply 2 years prior your residency start day.
At the same time you should apply to a prelim position (it is usually IM, General Surgery, Pediatrics prelim or Transitional year) trough ERAS.

Be sure to apply to many programs and as soon as possible.

Good luck!
