Question Residency match schedule!

Hi. I will be graduating in November 2013. I was wondering if I could apply to the 2013 match? Would it be tough to get ECFMG certified within this short period of time from November to December 2013. By the way, I would already have my Step 1, CK and CS cleared by then.

Also, why do people say its better to apply early to programs? (like by September or October). Assuming that most hospitals dont give out pre-matches any longer, would a November application be any different from an October application.

I'll be very grateful if someone can clarify.

Most programs want ECFMG certified, there are programs that want you to be certified by ROL (mid feb). Depends largely on the program.

Interview's are given on a first come first basis, so once all the spots are booked, even if you have the BEST application amongst their entire pool, you wont get an interview meaning no match in the end. This is why everyone says to apply early as possible.

From what I gather: my chances would be severely reduced by sending in a late application. Working on these lines, even if there is only a slight chance but it is a chance, that I might be able to match in 2013. Therefore I should apply for the 2013 match, right? If, God-forbid, I fail, then I can just apply again in the 2014 match. The PDs can't see if its my second year in the match, right?

Also, doesn't that seem a bit unfair that they don't even wait for the deadline to start ranking the applicants?!

Well, the other thing that you have to keep in mind is $$. Applications are expensive, and if you go into the match with both your arms and legs cut off, you'll just be wasting money. You have to optimize your chances of matching while also keeping things financially viable.

And, yea, the PD's wont know that you applied 2x (I think this was debatable, I've seen people saying they do know, and others saying they wouldn't).

Ranking is done AFTER interviews, which are given out in October/Nov/Dec to be completed in time for ranking. After they rank you, you rank them as well.. and the computer does its thing and gives you a result in march.

Okay, Thank you. I think I understand now.

By the way, could you please give me an estimate of how much a match would cost me?

Depends on how many programs you apply to, which would depend on factors like your scores/visa status/usce etc.

300 Applications costs around $7000 (2 specialties).

Do not forget the expenses to go to interviews, which may add up to thousands also!

Regarding knowing if you've applied or not: some PDs keep a record of who applied the previous year to their programme. So programme A might know that you applied there the previous year and not consider you because they think you failed the match because you're not good enough...or they might consider you nonetheless. It's all very subjective. Other programmes (B, C, D etc) would not know that you applied to other programmes during that match year or any other match year. No worries about that.

Personally, I think you should get your stuff together by next year as probably it's getting a bit late in the day for this year....

All the best.
