Arrow IMG willing to enroll in a pathology residency

hi all,

I am a international medical graduate (in 2011), I passed step1 with "so so" score (91/216). I am in US now and working in a pathology lab as a full-time lead technician in a university hospital (on cancer research). I believe my name will be on handful of papers within a year.

I would like to pass all the other steps (including step3, if it is possible) by july-august 2013 and would like to be a resident in a high profile hospital.

- What should I do to increase my chance?
- Is my work accepted as an "elective" or should I arrange additional electives?
- Can electives be arranged as "part-time"? for instance, can I go to the hospital for experience, say, after 2pm seven days a week?
- What do you guys recommend me?

The "elective" issue is that I dont know much more about it. Please enlighten me with you knowledge&experience

Thank you so much.

For pathology, your work experience as a lab technician at a research center would help you a lot. It would not be considered an elective experience because that is done when you are in med school. But still this experience would be very beneficial for your application if you can also publish some good articles during this time.

Try to improve your step2 scores so that you can show them that you have learned from your past experiences. You do not need to do step3 before residency. Its not at all required. No program has it in their residency selection criteria. Step 3 is only needed by some programs for H1 visa sponsorship and that you have to do ideally around February. In your case it would be feb 2014. Some programs allow you uptill March-April so it depends. The other visa (J-1) has no connection with step3, so you don't necessarily have to take it.

Well, this really helped me, thank you. By the way, should I need to have USCE? thank you for your kind help.
