Down Trend Hope is decreasing to Match

I am an IMG that came to USA in 2008, I made the bad decision to take STEP 1 the same year and I failed with a very low score 138. After that I thought it wasn't worth to try again so I decided to apply for a graduate program.
I am almost done with my Master degree in Molecular Biology and Microbiology with 3 publications and 3 years of research experience in stem cells and cardiovascular disease. I have won prices for my thesis research work.
I have decided to give it another chance and retake step 1 again after 4 years of not thinking about it. However, I feel after reading all the information in the internet I have a very small chance to match due to my score and the time since my graduation (2007).
Ok... this is a very sad and disappointed story but I would appreciate any advice from previous IMGs or anyone who sees a little bit of hope in me.

Default Hey

Well i think your username says it all. ''Hope never ends''.
Although it is difficult to match with a failed step, it has been done in the past. I know at least 5 people who failed and went on to match.
However , it is getting increasingly difficult . My advise would be to decide how much you really want this and then start your step 1 prep in earnest. Step 1 is key , spare no expense and energy in making sure you kill that exam the next time you do it.
Secondly, start deciding on what you want to do in terms of specialty , with a failed score you still stand a chance in Psychiatry (which God willing i will be going into) and Family medicine . Start working towards making contacts now and getting experience in these fields. Look for professors in mental health and other fields you are interested in and start sucking up to them ..now ..while you are a student (once you graduate it not be easy anymore) get close and tell them of your interest in going into their field and start working on publications in these areas as those are the ones that count.
You are 5 years post grad and that is a non modifiable factor in your application there is nothing you can do about that. People have matched with 6 -7 yr post grad though the yrs post grad reduces your chances there is still a chance.
In summary if you work hard and try you have a chance , but if you quit you wont .
