Question Getting Into A Program. Is it Still Possible?

I've been reading many forums and listening to other people's advice about applying for residency in the United States.

I'm an American Citizen who graduated from South Asia in mid 2009.

I've failed my Step 2 CS exam and I have not attempted Step 1 or Step 2 CK after failing my CS. So basically I've wasted 3.5 Years.

For US Clinical Experience I did a Clinical Elective for two months and for that I managed to get two LORs in 2009. One recommendation was great while the other one was okay.

I just want to know should I still continue on this path because some say my chances are low and it's going to be extremely hard for me to get into residency program; or even at all.

So if anyone could give me some advice on what to do, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

If you score well in step 1 and 2, you definitely have a chance. You have come this far, I would certainly advise you to take step 1 and 2 and apply when you are done. Also, do as much USCE as you can. try getting LORs. clinical experience does matter alot.

what residency do you want to do?

Hurry and study for Steps 1 and CK, cause it is getting more competitive, and you dont want your YOG to go into the 5 year range, cause it may limit the number of progs, esp FM that will consider you.

Get more US Clinical experience too, most FM progs want at least 6 mths.
Internal Medicine, love #s so shoot for as high as you can in Steps 1 and CK.

Also hope you've been doing something since 2009, cause you want to show you still have fresh clinical knowledge.

Unfortunately I couldn't accomplish much in three years because of personal reasons. But now I'm getting my head on straight before I decide if its a path I should still stay on. It's very difficult to get high scores. So that's why I wanted to know from fellow IMG's if it was still possible.

if you want my honest advice, internal medicine isn't really all that unless you get into a cardio or GI fellowship later on. I applied to mainly IM but i wish i did electives and clinical exp in family med or psych and would have had a better shot at matching this year. I only have 2 IM interview so far. most IM candidates hope to do fellowships in GI and cardio where the money is but those fellowships are very competitive and with Obamacare, the reimbursement will really suck in few years. I honestly wish i focused more on doing clinical exp with family med or psych.
i would advise you to do externships in psych and family as well so you have a shot at those programs too incase IM doesn't work out.
Im not discouraging you from IM at all, but keep options open for family med aswell.

Tammy,

I'll keep my options open. I know some IMG's are having problems getting into Family Medicine. Especially with the influx if IMGs coming from everywhere. I know people are also applying for Preliminary Spots in residency.

I've made a schedule and and ill be done with all my Steps by the next match, hopefully.

Any more advice in general is well appreciated. Thanks again.

Smile Never give up!

Hey!!

I want to STRONGLY enocurage you to start preparing for your steps if you haven't already done so!! If you can try to do a prep course like Kaplan to strengthen your base since it has been a few years since you graduated. Make sure you do everything possible to get high scores. Retake your CS maybe after doing one of the other steps so that you will feel a bit more confident! Also try to arrange for externships, observerships!! Maybe do an observership while you are studying or seeing if you can work in a private clinic while you are studying. Then once you get one of the steps done you can really devote more time to USCE while preparing for the other step. Don't give up especially if you really want to persue a career in medicine!!!! Work hard, go the extra mile and leave no stone unturned to achieve your dreams!!!! Hope that helps!!!!

Thank you! It's really hard to stay focus and be hopeful when most people will tell you it's impossible.

Anymore information from everyone will be helpful. Thanks.
