Dollar Sign Can we ask the program to pay for travel expenses?

So my question is during my travel plan if I request/ask the program coordinator for something logistics like transportation /hotel /relevant to the interview is that gonna make any bad impression? I am confused thats why asking. Any input /thoughts will be appreciated!:sorry:

totally ok, coz it's their job. you can ask for suggestions on transpo/hotel/etc. just don't force them for freebies, wait till they say "we will provide you with blah blah blah". as not all programs are well funded.
ask politely and they'd be glad to help.

They usually give that information when they invite you to interviews. If not, use google, google maps, greyhound, peterpan, southwest, expedia. And if you still have doubts call the PC and ask her something in specific. Don't pretend that she will make the arrangements for you. About 1/3 of my interviews didn't specify the hotels nearby. Just make your own travel plans.

You can ask for expenses. That's perfectly normal.

What I meant by travel expenses is:
Hotel and air ticket and transportation from airport and hotel. They don't give you the money, they pay for you the expenses for these.
That's the standard.

Is this information given to you after you attend the interview to university hospital programs (assuming they are well funded)? Is this the general experience? In my interview invites there were no discussions on expenses. Please clarify the trend in the majority of cases how this works.

Thanks

If a prog has allocated money for IV expenses, the PC will let you know. Thats what they do, and most progs, its lodging and pickup to and from the airport, never heard of any that pay plane tickets yet.

Actually many progs now are underfunded and dont even have that. If they dont say anything, asking isnt right. I definitely wouldnt be asking "Oh will you be paying for plane tickets?" Remember the PC is close to the PD and you do not want to leave a negative impression where you now become a subject of mockery.

If you doubt what I am saying, go and make this same post on SDN and see what the PDs/PCs and everyone else says...

I would agree not to ask about the plane ticket, but it's absolutely OK to ask about the other expenses such as Hotel and bus/shuttle/taxi transportation.

There's an old saying that mentions something along the lines of: If you are invited to a gathering, sit in the back, so when the host sees you there, it will be an honor when he asks you to sit in the front. If you sit in the front from the start, it would be a shame if the host would have to ask you to sit in the back because those seats were reserved.

I can only speak from experience and I'm not too convinced that asking the PC to accomodate your lodging would be a good idea.

Some programs paid for my hotels and others did not. I'm not a shy person but I dared not ask the ones not providing me with lodging to do so because if they had to tell me "no", already that is a bad start in my book. With those that did provide accommodations, I took it as a nice gesture and mentioned it in the followup thank you note.

Remember --- you are looking for a residency/employment... basically asking them to give you the opportunity to live a good & privileged life style. Nothing in this journey should be "too expensive", see all the ERAS fees, airline tickets, taxis, rental cars, hotels, etc as an investment for your future asset which is your potentially good lifestyle in the time to come.
