Question 3 year break gap after graduation!

I'm feeling very nervous about the entire process. I'm currently planning to apply for the 2014 cycle. I graduated in 2011.

Red Flags I have:

3 year gap b/t med school and residency in 2014
1 year 'Leave of Absense' in med school (grandmother went to hospice care)
Graduated from Poland, and I'm a US Citizen
Did all Rotations in year 3+4 in Poland (no US Clerkships)

Currently, I haven't done any Externships, although I plan to in Apr/May/Jun next year (2013)

I am currently studying for my Step 1 exam (planning to take in March/April). And will Take my Step 2 exam End of July/August. Step 2 cs, somewhere in between.

I'm planning to apply to family medicine and psych programs.

I just took a lot of time off from medicine, but now I want to get back in. Realistically, how high do I have to score on the Steps, and how difficult have I left this challenge for myself? With solid step scores, and Externships, do I have a good shot?

To be honest, a lot depends on how well you do on the Steps. If you do good, say a 230+ on each, then this gap will seem meaningless no matter what many say. Many people applying have at least a 2 year gap and I noticed that with good scores and US citizenship, they managed many IVs.

High-tier programs really don't care how high you score, because if you're an IMG chances are that you'll get filtered just on that.

Note: These are only observations from me for Internal Med., so take with a grain of salt.

Here's my recommendation.

Find the closest hospital to you that conducts clinical research. Talk to the head honcho there, tell them you want to come in and Volunteer for clinical research. They love people that work for free, especially qualified people. Do that 2-3 days a week. This will get you USCE (clinical research is the best form of USCE), a nice LOR and good connections.

Besides that you should just be studying your ass off and that's it...nothing else!!! Your goal should be to have all you results in before Sept. 1, 2013. Just kill yourself now. A few months of pain for a comfortable life ahead.

You're still a fresh graduate. A close friend of mine has been out of med school for 4 years and got 14 IVs this season.

It all comes down to you now, if you put it in the work I can definitely see you matching next year.

PS. Reggie was the man!!
