Philippines Is it easy to get into the Dermatology Program if You're a foreign medical graduate?

Hi there people. questions:

I really wanted to know how easy or hard it is to get in to the dermatology residency program for matching if you are a foreign medical graduate. especially I'm a Filipino.

2. what are the chances of getting matched and what are actually the requirements?

3. who offer the best dermatology program?

4. Are there really a big number of applicants applying for dermatology? (I mean because the lesser the people applying for the match, the higher chance of getting in.)

Thank you. please help.

Info Difficult but not impossible

Dermatology has been recently deemed as an extremely competitive specialty as more and more US graduates are looking for it because of the "happier" lifestyle (absence of night duties, high pay, ...etc).

Nevertheless, IMGs still getting into it but you need a very good profile which can be in the form of the following:

- Fresh graduate
- >95 in Step 1 and Ck (first attempt)
- Passing CS from first attempt
- Green Card or US citizenship
- USCE
- Dermatology research
- Connections in dermatology programs
- Strong US dermatology LoRs

Many IMGs are able to get into dermatology after a prelim or transitional year rather directly into an advanced dermatology program.

Default Hi there

Is it true that if i apply for dermatology residency at a particular hospital but i also apply for another residency (for example IM) at that same hospital, the program directors may see it as if i'm not fully committed to one specialty and wont grant me any interviews? should i apply for 2 specialties at different hospitals then? or still they will see that on my application?

Because in my case i'm planning to apply for derm residency in 2013 match but at the same time apply for the full IM residency program (not a preliminary or transitional year) so if i don't match in derm i can still have chances in matching at IM and do the 3 year Im residency, can i do that?

It's better not take chances. Residency programs in the same hospital may have access to each other. But residency programs in different hospitals do not have access to each other (100% sure about this).
So I were you, I wouldn't apply to IM in the hospitals where I applied for derm

No they don't have access to that, it's illegal for them to know what programs you have applied for or what is your ranking list.
