Thanks for the full PDF. This has been known for a while and some of the PDs I've met have actually brought this up in conversation. Nothing new. More US schools = more AMGs but no increase in residency spots. There is a push in the US Congress to try and increase funding for GME, but still nothing has happened.

Step taker,sabio..plzzzz throw some light on this.

so,no more IMGs from 2015-2016 match or 2014-2015 match???

why no more????

where should we go now?..i mean this should not be so fast..gradual elimination of IMGs was understood, but why this..???

You can be as optimistic as you want (I am too) but the fact of the matter is that US MD enrollment is increasing and residency spots are not increasing all that much. It's not that there will be no more IMGs (there will always be IMGs in the US) but it will likely become much more competitive with the steady increase in US graduates. Exactly how much this will affect us IMGs is unpredictable, but it is an undeniable fact that there will be more competition.

(I'm glad I got this out of the way this year)

it also depends on the specialty. there are specialties that has never needed IMGs at all and there are others that will always do.

hello guys. just wanna share an interview or should i say a discussion about me & a PD. (ended up talking about it the whole 30mins, i don't know how wud that PD score me for that IV)
just wanna clarify, it doesn't totally mean the window will be shut tight 2015, but the opening will really be small. and that for imgs, it will be an intense competition for the remaining positions. (PD said) the window will start to decrease starting next year owing to the increase of grads who enrolled 3-4yrs ago. another cause is that DO officials is also pushing to make DO grads eligible to take MD boards & do MD residency (and vice versa MD can do DO residency), but not sure when it will be approved, maybe next yr or the next or not at all. also coincidentally, his chief resident has submitted a bill/paper to officials for approval that suggests step3 be required to start IM PGY1, as it is a hassle & one would barely remember the other specialties once your totally immersed in IM..
1 new thing he noticed also is that a lot of AMGs nowadays are applying up to 50 programs, which he finds to be out of the ordinary compared to the usual 10-15 programs.
im kinda concern as i still have classmates, friends & relatives going for the coming matches. also what if i myself don't match this yr.
IMO, as long as there's still an opening, then there's still hope for imgs. "Nothing great ever comes easy" (quoted by justin bieber, grrrr get super irritated/annoyed by that kid )

Of course they can, but they can only enter residency on AOA approved programs. The AOA is the governing body for DOs much like the ACGME is for MDs. There are residency programs that are both AOA and ACGME-accredited, so DOs can enter those. That's where you have seen DO chiefs. Quite a few good programs are dually accredited, but not all.

There are residency programs that are only AOA-accredited, and you will not find those on ERAS because they are DO-only. As IMGs, we cannot apply to DO-only (AOA) residency programs.

JPRizal is absolutely correct in everything he said. It's the harsh truth. There is a push for trying to open up ACGME residencies for DOs (not sure if vice versa though). DO postgraduate training is very limited because there aren't too many programs. If approved, this would give them a shot at the MD residencies too, further increasing competition for these spots.
