Arrow No IMGs from 2015 - Check this JAMA Article

Hello everyone.. I came across this article published in JAMA which shows that it would be impossible for IMGs to match in USA in NEXT 2-3 YEARS... Can anyone shed some light on this?

We all heard that there will be a cut in IMGs but I dont think anyone expected this to be THIS SOON... !!

Unhappy

hi there, i just read the article that u posted and OMG that was totally scary and not promising.... thank you for sharing such a valuable and crucial piece of information although really disappointing....
unfortunately, i have nothing to add, except that just today in a huge coincidence a friend of mine who went to Kaplan for sometime said that Dr.Conrad Fischer mentioned the same argument and that it's actually anticipated to be on 2015, but yet one question is still in my mind, does 2015 mean that applicants on 2014 are the ones to be concerned or does it mean that the risk will start with applicants of 2015 for matching on 2016 ????
Anyway, i can only say let's hope that with all of this going on, US officials of concern hopefully intervene with something to counteract this and that no matter what happens strong applicants of IMG have a chance and not only as primary health care physicians but also as valuable assets in great big American hospitals with the best of luck of course to all AMG/IMG because after all we all worked and still work very hard to establish a decent medical career.

Default where is the truth

when will we know they will stop taking img
so when they stop, they will say no more applications for ecfmg!!!!!!
at least we will know that door is closed and decide to return to our countries
or try another country
but in the end you will find ecfmg accepting new applicants
you will find img applying each year and doing more us experience and giving their exams as planned
-even those who say no hope for img, will continue on their way pursuing residency
so this is life
enjoy

I agree with the above
hopefully there will still be a chance for us imgs
who worked realy hard for this
americans will not fill in primary care positions
which is mostly filled by imgs
and they are also likely to serve in rural areAs
and americans do not
so i still believe that imgs are needed in the usa
dontgive up yet

Default Figures misleading..

I just read the article. Not very clearly written. The numbers in the articles don't really match. Don't know where he got 2015 match from. He said there are approx 26K positions now and 19K AMG's and by 2016 there will be 26K enrolled(not graduates) students so at that time they will out number the residency spots but fails to mention they wont match until 2020. I know 24 or so schools are opening next sept from wikipedia (accuracy unkown since some have delayed opening or even withdrawn their application to open) .

I do not disagree that it will get tougher in the future. All this is common knowledge, we have to understand the purpose of this article being written. The number of schools opening is public information the number of spots is public information. So anyone taking the IMG path should understand to some degree that the road will be a bit rough. So the only reason I can see is that the Dr was to list a published article or to add fear to IMG and IMG candidates or both.

That's right. To be honest, the title is completely wrong. The first match we are talking about as withouth IMG is most likely 2019 match, not before. And consider that the numbers of graduated American students includes both osteo and allopathic.
Anyway, if you read other articules you can find out that there is a shortage of doctors, especially in primary care. And this articule assumes that PGY1 position numbers will not increase despite the shortage.

hello guys. just wanna share an interview or should i say a discussion about me & a PD. (ended up talking about it the whole 30mins, i don't know how wud that PD score me for that IV)
just wanna clarify, it doesn't totally mean the window will be shut tight 2015, but the opening will really be small. and that for imgs, it will be an intense competition for the remaining positions. (PD said) the window will start to decrease starting next year owing to the increase of grads who enrolled 3-4yrs ago. another cause is that DO officials is also pushing to make DO grads eligible to take MD boards & do MD residency (and vice versa MD can do DO residency), but not sure when it will be approved, maybe next yr or the next or not at all. also coincidentally, his chief resident has submitted a bill/paper to officials for approval that suggests step3 be required to start IM PGY1, as it is a hassle & one would barely remember the other specialties once your totally immersed in IM..
1 new thing he noticed also is that a lot of AMGs nowadays are applying up to 50 programs, which he finds to be out of the ordinary compared to the usual 10-15 programs.
im concern as i still have classmates, friends & relatives going for the coming matches. also what if i myself don't match this yr.
IMO, as long as there's still an opening, then there's still hope for imgs. "Nothing great ever comes easy" (quoted by justin bieber, grrrr get super irritated/annoyed by that kid )
