Program Directors What do Thank you note from PD's indicate

Does it indicate they are ranking some one ?
[Depending on the content]

Is hand written card better than an email from PD ?

From my understanding, most IM programs will end up ranking 7-8 positions per slot. It seems most programs tend to interview 10 applicants per slot as well. So I guess most people get ranked, and whether it is high or low depends on your scores, letters, interview performance, etc. As far as thank you notes and emails, the programs that do reply to them seem to reply to all the candidates that write one. The ones that don't, just don't. This is what I've gathered from this season and I'm sure some people will disagree. Good luck! I don't think anyone can disagree with the advice to not much too much weight on this things and rank based on your preferences, not their perceived interest in you.
