Info What are my chanses??!!

Do I have a chance to make an urology residency even if I don't have research or Away rotations? And how many LOR's do I need?

Out of all the IMGs/FMGs that I come in contact and followup with after the MATCH season, approximately 95% that matched had completed a minimum of 4 hands-on clinical rotations in the US and obtained 4 LORs from US Physicians related to the specialty applying to. 5% matched without having any US hands-on clinical experience.

What is preventing you from obtaining US hand-on clinical experience?

Basically my not -so good grades of Med school, im still in my fourth year of medschool in México and I haven't take any of the steps. I've heard that if I do very good in the Step 1 and 2 (both CS & CK) I have a good chance of match even if I dont make away rotations but I wanted to read more about that, thank you for your comment.

Great, we help many medical students and graduates from Mexico each year complete a portion of their elective rotations in the US and additional clinical hands-on clinical rotations in the US once they have graduated.

Just keep in mind that USMLEs only make up 30% of your ERAS application. 60% of your ERAS application is related to US clinical experience.

Refer to articles on the selection criteria for residency so that you can better prepare and increase your chances of securing residency in the US:

- Selection Criteria for Residency: Results of a National Program Directors Survey
Marianne Green, MD, Paul Jones, MD, and John X. Thomas, Jr., PhD

If you do not do any rotations in the US, you will not match into Urology, period. That is an insanely competitive match even for AMGs. You must have research, publications and board scores of 250s to match into Uro, Ortho, neuro-surg, etc. Sorry.

"Despite student perceptions that research in medical school is an essential ingredient for a successful application to residency, our findings indicate that research experience ranks low among selection criteria when all specialties are grouped together. The NRMP also found that research experience in medical school did not differ significantly among U.S. seniors who matched in their specialties of choice and those who did not.1 This was consistent across competitive and noncompetitive specialties. It should be noted, however, that in our survey, program directors in particularly competitive specialties (radiation oncology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, and dermatology) ranked research experience highly (Table 3). It may be that when all other selection criteria are outstanding among applicants to a particular specialty, research experience or research publications may help discriminate candidates."
