Question Three Questions about Residency Matching

  1. So what exactly do we need to have ready by September 1st? I know you're supposed to be ECFMG certified but does that mean your scores have to be in or that you should have written your steps?
  2. Do you also have to have your reference letters and all that in?
  3. Do you get to see your reference letters or do your references mail them to the ECFMG directly?

Arrow Three Answers!

  1. Most residency programs are OK with you if you get your certificate later after the interview but few of them need you to be ECFMG certified before the interview. So to maximize your chances you are better to be ECFMG certified before September 1st, not just waiting for the results.
  2. Yes, you have to have your letters of recommendation (LoRs) before September 1st. I mean it's better for the same reason above.
  3. It doesn't matter. But some experts say that if you waive your rights (don't see the letter) will have more weight in the eyes of residency program directors.
