Listening Is having an MA in Psychiatry helpful?

I'm planning to match in psychiatry in hopefully 2015. I want to get into a high tier residency, MGH for example. I have interests in global mental health and global psychiatry and plan to pursue a fellowship in global psychiatry after completion of residency.

However I am an IMG with no US clinical experience. I've graduated with honors from my medical school. I am currently pursuing a Master in Community Psychology from the American University in Cairo (accredited by the Middle States Association in the US).

Will this degree (complete with a thesis and dissertation), in addition to good USMLE scores bolster my chances of getting into a high tier residency program in psychiatry?

Any reply is greatly appreciated.

Yes. Definitely.

This degree will demonstrate your dedication to the field of psychiatry and it will help you a lot.

However, you still need to have some sort of USCE to even have a greater chance of matching in higher tier programs.

If you were to choose between USCE and that degree, I would recommend USCE, but doing both is wonderful.
