Default Importance of Time taken to graduate vs Time taken till applying for Match

How important is applying for the match as soon as possible after graduating?

How important is the time taken before graduating?

How does this look to the selection committee?

From what I have heard (from people and internet) is that programs prefer candidates that just graduated and a gap looks bad. However in my own personal experience, it doesn't look bad as long as the gap is less than 5 years. I have a whole 3 year gap, I graduated in 2010. I have done nothing related to medicine in last 3 years (except for 4 week externship last year). No one asked me what i have been doing since 2010 or why I have a gap. But again, I only had 2 interviews.
I think the scores, USCE, LOR carry more value than time since graduation. I had to answer to every interviewer why my score was not so good but nothing about the gap of 3 years.
however, it is probably best to apply sooner as most programs might make a big deal about it. depends on your luck and what the PD is thinking.

Wow! Thank you SO much for the clarification! I've been looking everywhere for that simple answer. Congratulations btw for matching! I will definitely work hard on getting good scores and USCE and stop worrying about time so much. I was ready to quit my Step 1 prep cuz everyone was telling me to hurry and get my degree.

One last question tho, I have yet to recieve my degree because I have left some portions incomplete. Will they care about the time it took for me to get my degree? Or will they care more about me graduating and then taking time off?

Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

No, it does not matter how late you get your degree. I got mine after over a year since graduating because my university kept shutting down due to political unrest in the country (pakistan). however the date of graduation on my degree is still 2010.
I dont recommend taking time off unless you are doing internship in your home country or doing externship/usce in US.

I am currently technically taking time off to study for Step 1. I am kinda stuck because I have already put in 2 months of effort. I have yet to complete my MBBS degree because I havn't finished my internship (here in india). But once I finish my internship, i will no longer be eligable for clerkships. Is it ok for me to take these 6 months to take Step 1, then finish my internship here, and before getting my degree do 3 or 4 months of USCE?

take your time to study for steps because scores are very important. take step 1, then finish your internship, and then USCE. sounds like a good plan.
goodluck!
