I applied for Masters in Public Health (aug 2013) in UNITED STATES and got calls from many universities like USF etc
My sole aim of applying to MPH is to have some US medical experience while doing Mph so that i can get a match in Residency (do MD). For applying to Residency programs next year ie sept 2014. (STEP 1 score - 245)
1) Is it possible to apply for Match while doing MPH on J1 visa?
2) Can I apply for H1b visa while doing Mph becoz i would complete only one year of Mph at the time of applying for Residency ie sept 2014 and will complete Mph in aug 2015 and soon after that Md will start (if i get selected in Sept 2014 interviews).
3) PLEASE TELL ME MERITS OF GOING FOR MPH IN ORDER TO DO MD AS MY FINAL GOAL. IS it really a Better Option as compared to just applying for observerships ?
I will arrange money with Education loan..........or some other loan.......
This is also one of the reason why i wanted to make sure that MPH is actually helpful or not..............
SHIMA if u have some good idea please let us knw
you r welcome
I don't actually know which one of them is best for MPH but my guess is that they are all good and recognized so your choice would depend on which one is most affordable and which geographic area suits you.

If your goal is to match into a residency program, I'd like to suggest that you apply to MPH programs who have IMG friendly residency programs. I say this because I have run into several MPH students who did their medical education overseas and were interviewing at the university's residency program in which they were getting their MPH from (I applied for IM). Stony Brook has a great IM program (I interviewed there), I don't know much about their MPH program. Drexel/Hahnemann has a great MPH program (they are ranked top 25 in the nation) and a good IM program as well. I hope what I'm saying is making sense. If you're not sure about residency and the MPH may be the end goal, go for the best program you can get into. All I can say for sure is that you are more likely to get an interview from the same university you did the MPH at vs. someone who didn't do it there. Note that I'm not saying it increases your absolute chance, just your relative chance.
thanks for valuable suggestion. I have got acceptance from Stony brook and i have searched for its ranking but couldn't find it anywhere.
Do you know any site where i can find exact details?
should i accept the stonybrook offer over the University of south florida?
I just went by U.S. News & World Report rankings. I don't know all that much about MPH programs outside of the rank list they have there. I do know that Stony Brook IM is much more friendly than USF IM. I didn't apply to USF IM due to their requirements of USCE, I believe they needed a year or so.
Thanks for your valuable response....Happy-2
As i am applying for 2014 interviews and coming to US in August 2013. What is the best time and method to apply for observership? should i first come and then apply or i should apply now........
Is there any other way to get Clinical experience ? (other than observership)
yes i did......................there are very few options without GRE.
Moreover Visa officer will not give u visa without a gre and good college score..........Its better to be with GRE
Today one of my seniors who got pediatrics residency (NY) this year gave me an advice.
Acc to Him I should bring a good Step 2 score ( around 250) and then apply for Observership rather than going for MPH to US
He say that i can easily get into good residency program if have 3 to 6 months of USCE...
N i m quite confused which way to go............Some say go for Mph( u will have contacts, a degree n can also get relevent clinical experience) while others say just do 3 to 6 months of observerships n dont waste money....
If you want my honest advice, don't go for MPH. Spend that money in observerships at different programs, and research experience, not just research assistant, but DO work in research and have publications.
Save your money and use them in a beneficial way
