List Rank order list a reason for not matching?

Could a rank order list also be a reason for not matching? A lot of people say that you should rank programs according to where you want to go, which I don't completely agree with right now. I think you should rank programs according to where you did well in interviews and where you're likely to be matched. But I don't really know if using either approach will make any difference in whether you'll match or not.

Rank Order List does not affect the matching probability.

If a program ranked you and you ranked that program (no matter what position) then you will match there (if there are seats available at the time the R3 software snapped the match) for sure.

You should rank the programs the way you like them not the way they liked you, because your ranking does not affect the ranking done by programs.

This has been explained by the NRMP repeatedly
Here's a quote from the NRMP website

Quote:
Applicants should list programs in their actual order of preference, beginning with rank #1 for the most preferred program. Their choices should not be influenced by speculation about whether a particular program will rank them high, low, or not at all. The position of a program on an applicant's rank order list will not affect the applicant's position on a program's rank order list.

and also there's a nice thread about it here

I just read the thread about the rank order list. In a way that does makes sense. But the problem is you're competing with hundreds of other candidates for very few spots. If you rank the program #5 for example, and the other candidate ranks the same program #1, and the program ranks BOTH you and the other candidate, then wouldn't the other candidate be more likely to match to that program than you would?

Plus are you familiar with being "partially matched"? That's what happened with one of my good friends and he said he should have done a better job ranking the programs.

You ranked program X #5
Applicant B ranked program X #1
Applicant C ranked program X #15

Program X ranked you #10
Program X ranked Applicant B #12
Program X ranked Applicant C #5

What matter is how program X rank you and applicant B and applicant C. If program X ranked you higher than Applicant B, then you will have the priority over him regardless of anything else.

Again. program ranking list is NOT affected by applicant ranking list and vice versa (as pointed out in the NRMP text I quoted for you above).

The R3 software might rank applicant B before you (in time), what's called a tentative match. But R3 keeps running along all thousands of applicants lists one by one and once it reaches you after few hours and find that Program X ranked you higher than Applicant B then R3 will remove Applicant's B tentative match and put you in that spot. Then again it will continue running across the thousands of applicants and if it finds Applicant C ranked by Program X higher than you then it will remove you and put Applicant C in your spot.

R3 actually will not remove you or Applicant B, it will shift you down. So if there are still seats available in Program X then you are still matched but once you are pushed to a position beneath the available seats (for example position 11 and the program takes 10) your tentative match is cancelled and R3 will go over the remaining programs in your rank order list.
