Question Emergency Residency NY

I'm an American/Australian Citizen born and raised in US who decided to study med in Australia (currently 3rd year). Now, I am hoping to specialize in the US.

I have always wanted to train in NYC. I hear they are pretty good at taking IMGs. Any information/advice about the programs or getting there? I am allowed 2 rotations in the US in 4th year. ED can only be done at Ochsner in LA.

My qualifications so far:
1) BSc Biomedical Science University of Queensland
2) Former AZ Sate EMT and NREMT certification
3) Step 1 - 247 - Just got my scores last week
4) Just now starting a research project that is ED/Surgical in nature which I hope to finish/attempt to publish in one year's time.

Also considering doing the Transitional Year Residency at University of Hawaii my first year out to be a more attractive candidate (more US experience and LoR) and to go home for a year.

I appreciate any thoughts.

Any particular reasons why you chose that location and type of internship?

1. Hawaii is extremely hard to match, obviously right? Who wouldn't want to go live on a vacation island for 3 years.

2. Transitional years are hard to get, as their designed for another purpose (those specialties that require intern year). Prelim year is far easier to get and serves the same intention.

My suggestion: Apply directly to EM, no need for the extra year.

I hope you've looked at this years match stats. EM is extremely competitive, I think they had <10 unfilled spots throughout the whole country this year.

Yes, there are actually several reasons I chose the UH transitional residency.

Specifically UH:
1) Born and raised in Hawaii on the same island and want to get back ASAP. I am still technically a Hawaiian resident and feel this would give me a leg up.
2) My goal is to work in HI permanently after specialization. I would specialize but there does not seem to be an EM training program.
3) UH Med is an "Official International Partner" of my school in Australia which will allow me to do 2 rotations there next year. And, I may possibly do an extra elective rotation there in Dec if possible now that I know.
4) Actually just found this out but my father did this exact program years ago. He also worked in HI in internal med and completed undergrad at UH, so I thought this could potentially give me another leg up.
5) Though I haven't sat Step 2 yet, I felt my Step 1 score of 247 was reasonably competitive and would help me get a competitive spot although I know it's not everything.

Transitional in general:
As a Citizen-IMG I know my situation is not as good as a domestic applicant but better than a non-citizen. I want to make myself a strong candidate for residency in one of the best programs I can for EM (although I am also very minorly considering radiology) and I think time in an American training program + more experience in general would make me a stronger candidate and better EM doctor as it is so multifaceted. Frankly, I also just like the idea of doing some additional broad training. My plan before discovering the program was to do a year of internship in Australia (not tied to training program directly) before applying to the US.The broad understanding is also why I completed my EMT-B training as night school during my undergrad.

How do I best begin to find out how competitive certain programs are?
