Surgery Getting into General Surgery

Hello,
Im an IMG preparing for the step 1. I didn't plan my career ahead and hence started late. I'm interested in GS only, i realize that im not eligible for any hands on USCE and im wondering how much this will affect my chances? I want to know if i still have a shot at getting into a good program because i'm willing to put in as much effort and work as hard as required. I'd be grateful for all your advice,
Thank you..

if you have your home country experience...it would be better...
even if you don't get in categorical position in GS..
you can get prelim position which is a bit easy..
work on that for 1 year ..if lucky you may get any second yr position..
or reapply for categorical again..

Forget about getting into GS, unless you have great scores of 250+ AND a Green Card

get 240+ on both steps, do some research and if u can externships, you should be able to match and if u have GC or citizenship , even better.

You can, but be realistic and know what you want. Stats show that everyyear IMGs match in General surgery. So it is possible. What you should know that you need a well rounded application. High USMLEs, good school grades, US surgery hands on rotations at great institutions, publications. Those are the most important.
Although home experience and being a citizen/ GC holder would help and be a plus, they are not required and not important as the factors above. Again, be realistic. Again, high scores are crucial. I guess I need to explain what high scores means. 260s and above. 230, 240, 250 were considered high scores for IMGs in the past and still considered high for American graduates. That's why you need to get higher scores than AMGs. You may ask if I get 255, is it a bad score? No it is not and you can match if you have other factors under your belt, However, 260s, 270s and 280s are legendary!! Not everybody gets them and that's why not everybody match in competitive specialties or even top tier programs of least competitive specialties.

what about years since graduation...cuz i dont think 260s and above would look that impressive if it took more than 3 years to get them! i really dont believe they look at scores as much as the other factors. i think they would go for a cut off certain score, but beyind that, they arent gonna sit there comparing who got the most lick-ass fab score! thats just unrealistic. i think being in the US, trying to get experience and exposure under reputed surgeons would matte more.
