Curriculum Vitae Medical scribe as usce?

Hi guys. What do you guys think of working as a medical scribe? Will it be considered as a USCE?

Any PD in the house? Let me know your thoughts. I am scheduled for an interview soon. But I'm torn if I should pursue it or enroll with chicagoclerkships.

Pro's: I get to work in an ER of a very good medical center. Good clinical exposure as o cases and US medical system. You continue to make histories and physical examination, but not your composition. Still, its a good feel working with what you should be doing. Good chance of networking with drs.

Cons: Full time-1 yr commitment/Part-time 2 yr commitment. Not sure if the drs working with you will give an LOR, but it would be subject to your rapport I guess. Not sure if the drs would be willing to teach you stuff in their spare time. I heard the pay is not very good.

But if this is considered as a USCE, your getting a USCE, and paid at the same time.

Or should I just enroll with a paid externship?

Need your inputs. Thanks.

Thanks shima. yup, that's the obvious... I'm just trying to rationalize thinking it's better than an observership, which entails not much of active participation compared to a scribe...I guess I really need to spend to get an externship opportunity.

You don't have to spend. If you have good board scores on USMLE and have the time to apply for next years match you may be able to get some through hospitals

Apparently, I really have mediocre scores. No failures. But not really good scores. Plus old IMG. Still hoping for a great step3 score though. pending results...USCE is what I really need to boost my credentials. Its so hard to get one.

if your scores are like in 210-219 you need 6 month USCE

Took my exams in 2007. I only have passing scores and the 3 digit scores are lower than what you have posted. The only advantage I have is I have a GC, which is not much of an advantage...

6 months of USCE is going to cost me alot. Should I enroll instead in Medical Assisting to get this 6 months of USCE? Although I am still going to join this coming match season.

I'm bumping this thread.

How is being a scribe not USCE? I also have an interview soon, but yes, that time commitment is insane considering that I'm still preparing with boards and stuff. Any other inputs? How did it turn out for you rye?

Default @tootsie

Hi tootsie. I didn't go through with it. because of transportation issues. However, I did observerships and a month of paid externship. The work itself may not be really qualified as a USCE I believe.

Somehow the observerships/externships I hv had bridged/acclimatized me to the medical system in the US. So It's worth really having usce. I'm doing non-clinical work in an office for doctors visiting pt's at home. Though not usce, but behind-the-scenes work in inputting medical hx and pe's and carrying out/arranging the dr's orders, referrals for them gives me understanding with how primary care works in this setting.

In line with medical scribes, it will not be usce. But if you already have usce, like what I have had, you can always work it to your advantage in terms of hospital exposures/how orders are written, and you'll hv somewhat continuous exposure clinically although you're just writing it, as compared to doing nothing and creating a gap in your cv, or doing something unrelated. It doesn't pay as much though. That's what I hear.

As to the match, pray for me guys. I have my one and only interview coming soon. But I'll be the one-interview-matched-guy-with-low-scores soon. I'll stay positive, pray and make it happen! Wish me Luck! Hope we all match soon!
