Default Honest advice

Hey guys, I need honest advice. I recently failed my step 1 exam for the 3rd time by a few points. I am not allowed another attempt (ECFMG rules) until November. I wanted to give myself about 2-3 months to prepare again but am forced to wait 6 months. Do I just study for 6 months? Is there anything I can do to help my resume in the meantime while studying? I don't want to change careers without giving it just one more attempt (especially since I was off by a few points). I know that if I score well on Step 2, I will be able to figure something out for residency, even though it will be tough.

I am posting here because I feel that this category of the forum is more experienced than the Step 1 forum. You guys might know better. What would be the smart thing to do here? I don't know what to do. Advice would be greatly appreciated, good or bad.

the smart thing is for you to study day and night, day and night. and pass with a score of 240+.

I know you do not want to quit medicine but many states have the 3rd attempt rule. meaning if you failed 3 times you will not get licensed.

but to answer your question, nothing will help you other than scoring very very very well.

the worst part is, that people with 3 attempts usually fail for the 4th time also, since they are either poor test takers or are missing the basic science components they need to pass. the first part of medical school really needs to be taught well for you to pass the USMLE step 1.

Many low tier schools in the carib, even though they produce 10% residents still have 90% of people who fail to recognize the basic sciences.

OP has either poor exam taking skills or he has poor grasp of knowledge of basic medical sciences.

a perfect way to see this, is for OP to pass the exam and see if he could pass USMLE step 2 CK.

Suggestion:

USE the NBME self assem exams.

no more fun, just study

If you want to pass and learn something,

Call Becker Reviews, I think they are the new Falcon reviews.

you will score higher and thank me later,

Hey thanks for the responses everyone. You are correct. I am from a carib medical school.. and I do believe my basic sciences are poor. I took 4 NBMEs prior to my most recent exam scoring from 193-203. During my earlier attempts, I did not pass my NBMEs except for one. This time around I wanted to make sure I was consistently passing my NBMEs.. and I did pass 4 of them. I know I wasn't scoring high on them, but I was attempting my exam for the 3rd time and just wanted to pass and make up for it on the Step 2. I appreciate the honest advice. I am not too sure what to do from here. I could study hard and try for one last attempt. I am aware of the 3 attempt rule for being licensed in certain states. I would like to know what I can do to help me move forward with my career, if i choose to stay on this path. Should I just study hard for 6 months?? Would doing research that doesn't require many hours/week help me later when I do pass? Thanks again for the responses.

Research will not help you at all. Not even a little.
You probally went to All Saints University/ Windsor/ AIUM. Since that is the only school these days on the forum which its people have problems with Basic Sciences with.

My advice
1) switch schools. get those transcripts.
2) take Beckers Review and learn everything from scratch

Your only chance of ever being a doctor is to pass with an above average mark like 240+.

if not you will never match in USA. Never. unless you cure cancer, and after that who wants to do residency.

So I am sorry. No sugar coating. People on the forum are high on kindness, so many will not or wont tell you this. You have minimal chances like 2% if you score well on step 1 [224+]
it will go up to 15% if you have 237+ on Step 2 CK and 25% if you pass STep 3.

But again now we know you have basic sciences issues.

You should really go to Beckers review.

PS: if you are from those schools I mentioned or if your school is under 4 years you are
