Default Scores needed for IMG Psychiatry match?

Hello all,

I am an Egyptian IMG, YOG 2011, working on Step 1. It's my dream to specialize in psychiatry and I'm entering Step 1 this August.
I keep reading and hearing everywhere about how the Match is getting harder and harder for IMGs every year and how the scores keep going up, etc... and it's pretty discouraging.
I want to know what the scores needed for an IMG match generally are and what the scores for a psych match are in particular.
Is psychiatry in general a competitive specialty?

I am also into public health and am preparing an MA in community psychology at the American University in Cairo, Egypt (which is accredited by the Middle States Association in the US and has a New York office i.e. more credible than the average Egyptian state university). I'll be done with it roughly the same time I am done with the steps. It involves courses on counseling, ethics, program design and evaluation and a thesis and dissertation at the end.

Will this degree boost my chances in any way?
I also should say I do not have USCE - would taking Step 3 prior to matching boost my chances?

Thanks!

Definitely, having step 3 and the degree is an added advantage. But if you get low scores on step 3 you might be ranked low.

Usually the cut off marks for step 1 in psy are very low.I cant say a definite figure.Best thing is to search FREIDA and look up the individual programs. Then google the program and checkout their web page. The will mention about the cut off marks threre.

For psychiatry the marks for step 1 is not that important. But if you fail a step you will be ranked low.

Will you be needing a visa?

Thanks water! Yes, unfortunately I'll be needing a visa. I also want to search for USCE after I am done with step 1. But since I'm no longer a student I can't take electives like the kind med students in America take. If I do an observership and get US LoR's will that help.

If the cutoff marks are low in psych, that's great! I'll still try to maximize my score so that I can get into a good program though.

Nowadays cut-offs for any program are getting higher by the day. So i suggest that u study and get as high as possible. Imagine , right now as we are speaking there are hundreds of ppl that will have higher scores than you , and they will apply for the same position as you are applying too, what are you gonna do about that? just a thought for you too keep in the back of your mind.

Yes try to maximise your step 1 and step 2 score.Especially the step 2 score which is important for psychiatry. But then again you will need a good step 1 score to get a high step 2 score. Also do an observership or an externship to show your commitment to the feild. And try not to fail any steps.
