Smile How can I improve my application?

I've done 3 months electives at very good University teaching hospitals, passed Step 2 CS and Step 1 (above average score) in the first attempt, taken Step 2 CK this week.
I don't have any publications yet.
Should I go for an observership or volunteer research? Is it better to do research/observership at an IMG-friendly place or should the reputation of the place be the top priority?
I'm a little worried about the USCE as I had done the electives in early 2011. It will still be counted, right?
I also have a few months of work experience in my home country and I need a visa.
Assuming I get above average scores in Step 2 CK, what are my chances of matching in Pediatrics / IM-Peds?

Thanks!

I have 3 months of electives, 3 LORs.
I've just taken Step 2 CK and am not doing anything at present.
Should I work here in my home country or just concentrate on studying for Step 3?

Your chances are great I always wonder why people with above average scores want something less competitive, like Peds. If I were you I would push myself further than Peds. Myself I have no choice, I dont want Peds, but will apply for back up.
Good luck to all

I think you should be good.

What is it in your application that is making you think you might not have a chance.

I would suggest IM/PED, I tell you why. many countries do not sponsor J-1 Visa for IM/PED so you are in a huge edge of getting IV and matched.
one of those countries is Canada.

I would apply to all the IM/PED combined programs.

I don't get it; how exactly is it an advantage if many programs don't sponsor a J1?
Do most IM/Peds programs sponsor an H1B? (Btw, I'm not a US citizen or a GC holder).

Like I mentioned before, I did my USCE 2 years back. Is that ok? I know most programs ask for a "recent" USCE.

Thanks!

Default Step 3

Better do your USCE in an IMG freindly program.Because if you impress them, there is a chance that they will give you a interveiw there. Also study for step 3 as it will increase your chances of matching, but make sure you score high, otherwise you will be ranked low.

Which is better? Research, work in home country or an Observership?
Research in a famous (non-IMG friendly) or at an IMG-friendly institution?

Observership >> research >>> Home country

but research always leads to observership

Elective rotations in early 2011.

Are you aware that most residency programs require recent USCE and related LORs/Clinical Evaluations from US Attending Physicians to be within the last 2 years?

Many IMGs in your situation enroll in an English development program in the US that offers visa sponsorship. While in the US they manage to complete additional hands-on clinical rotations, observerships and research.

Since your USCE appears to be outdated and are in need of a visa to enter the US this may be a good alternative to look into.

Best - Victor
