One interviewer asked about med questions, but they are just easy ones. The PD asked mainly about my application. Low-stress interview all-in-all. I actually enjoyed my interview there.

Heard it's a malignant program. A friend had an interview there and said they don't ask any clinical questions. Just that ppl don't prefer it and many ppl drop out

Hello,
My statistics are
step 1-258(1)
step 2-237(1)
CS pass(1)
YOG 2010
3 month USCE on application - currently 5th month of externship.
2 US LOR 2 Indian LOR
Need J1 visa

No research
Applied to IM only.

and Only one IV and 2 on hold so far
can anyone guide me why I am not getting IVs?
Is there anything I can do to get more IVs?

Default Addition

Just a quick addition.
I did 2.5 month of observership in OBGYN back in India. I just wanted to explore OBGyn and that I've mentioned in my application. However, I am interested in Internal Medicine only and have applied to IM programs only.
So, do you think that I made a big mistake by mentioning that 2.5 month of observership?

I have an interview coming up at Jamaica medical center and nassau university medical center. Trying to gather info about these programs as their webpages dont offer much info.
Has anybody interviewed there so far, any idea what the programs are like?

If you don't mind me asking where did you get a prematch offer or if you don't want to disclose than do you mind telling what state?

Thanks

@hafu23
Sorry to enter in this conversation, but you got to be extra careful with that. Did you exchange email with them implying that you would accept it? It might be considered as legal proof. The best course would be to let them know that you don't want the prematch anyone and ask them to withdrawn the offer. Another thing is that PC and PD talk to each other and if you don't honor your previous statement thing can get really complicated for you.

Good luck

Your right, only the contract is what is legally binding. Though it doesn't look good but does that really matter considering this is your future/career we are talking about. I do however recommend you think clearly and know that if you do deny this prematch you should be 100% sure you will match and not only match but match into something better based on your priorities. Rest you can always just message them and tell them I have had time to rethink and unfortunately no longer can accept the pre-match.

Hey thank you for replying. I was told that programs can sometimes sabotage candidates by reporting to the Nrmp or ecfmg of an irregular behaviour and the candidates get banned from the match for a long time....i dont want that happening to me... I have decent scores in both steps, am a graduate of 2011, have 3 electives, one published research and have been offered 8 interviews including the prematch.... 3 of the interviews are at big university programs and the rest are good university affiliated.... Now you tell me what are my chances in the main match
Ps: i need a visa

Default a dumb question !!

at one of my interviews, I was interviewed by the CHAIRMAN of IM instead of the PD , he was very pleased with me. what I wanna know is ,is the chairman the supervisor of the PD or is it the other way around??
as easy as the answer may seem,I asked a lot of my friends & they had no clue.

one more thing ,he told me that if I rank them high ,I have a shot there but he didn't say it in a way that guarantees anything , so what do you guys think?

thank you & good luck

Dude, talk to them, give them a call, I'm sure it'll be ok, since there's a ton of people desiring your spot that are next in their list.. But do it quickly and make sure there's no misunderstanding.. If you have good credentials and nice interpersonal skills with a decent number of ivs, you'll probably match somewhere else..

Thanks man! I wish the best for you too, I'm always checking this forum.. Regarding the IV season, I'm a little bit tired because of the traveling, but after my second IV I was much more confident in my answers.. Well, let's hope everything turns out ok and I can contribute to this forum by sharing my story and experiences in march when it's over..

There's no simple answer for that, my friend.. I barely passed the ICE component, it was really close, so I totally identify with your frustration.. If I were you, I would try to retake CS ASAP, first!!! Attend these 3 IVs and try to impress them, if you're inquired about your CS, be honest with them and show some maturity by not trying to give some stupid excuses.. If they love you, they'll take you.. But I'd say your chances of matching this year are not the best, since there's a ton of outstanding applicants IVing in these places, but getting 3 IVs nowadays is no small feature, so be persistent my friend and you'll turn your dreams into reality! Another thing is be prepared to the scramble, I don't know how it works, but if you are ECFMG certified by march, you'll be able to get it!

Most definitely GO for your interviews. Once you are present on interview day you stand an equal chance and are comparable with everyone else that has interviewed irrelevant of your scores. Just have a good reason for your CS result. Show them that its just in the SEP section that you did not fair well. Prove to them during the interview that your language skills are at par. If I were you I would give the exam ASAP. Probably before Dec 31st (Should there be dates available). Cause you need your results in before rank deadline.

This is just my opinion. I wish you all the best

Wow you are very lucky to get 3 interviews without CS if you are an IMG!

Hopefully you can get your passing CS before rank or match. Good luck on your interviews!

I've just begun to receive IVs.
I did everything REALLY late.
My CS score came out in the beginning of Dec. -- PASS 1st attempt.
My CK score is coming out this upcoming week -- hopefully.
My Step 1 is 238.
I essentially applied with only Step 1 in October -- so I was a month late in applying. I just updated the programs with my CS.
I only have 2 IVs so far.

And I was told IMGs can't get interviews without CS and CK. You proved them wrong! Congrats.

Hopefully it all works out. I really wish I could of had everything
done by Sept. 15th. That would be the biggest advice I could give to folks out there.

90+ in Internal Medicine (could not apply to a lot of programs due to my extra attempt)

I am wondering the same thing. I didn't think my credentials were that bad. I guess my credentials are not good enough either.

Your credentials are fine for getting IVs from FM programs.
IM programs are particularly more competitive this year but
from what I've seen from my friends applying to FM, your credentials should warrant some IVs. Maybe 1 will come this week? I know of people that have lower scores than you -- but they don't need a visa.

Keep your chin up. You've worked hard up to this point and I know it'll pay off. The season isn't over yet.

Thanks mpnyc! I really hope it's the visa and not my credentials that is stalling any interview invite, although having a green card would be a great game changer for me.

IM is definitely hard this year. At this point I would be grateful for anything.

I definitely know programs are still looking at apps. Last week I got 2 emails stating that my app was on hold for my upcoming CK score. Programs will be interviewing until end of January so you still have time. Do you know of any current residents in IM or FM programs?

I do and even had some connections but nothing came through with any. Pretty bummed out but they tried their best and I'm grateful they tried. Now it's up to my fate because don't think I can do much else.

Called programs too but a lot of them filled their interview slots and some IM programs are prematching this year.

So far according to usmleforum.com and programs I called:

Providence, MI
Mount Sinai Chicago
Some NY programs that's I can't apply to so I didn't write down their names

There are more but I don't have access to my list at the moment (the above two are from the top of my head) so if anyone can add on from the other forum it will be helpful

I essentially applied with only Step 1 in October -- so I was a month late in applying. I just updated the programs with my CS.
I only have 2 IVs so far.

Wow congrats!! You really have gone against all odds!

What's your YOG and do you have USCE?

Congrats again.

I'm graduating 2014 and all my CE has been in NYC community hospitals.
Right now I'm reaching out to senior residents at various hospitals and seeing if they can get me an interview.

My CK score I think will come out tomorrow (took the exam on Nov. 29th). Do you think I should send out an email to all the programs that have not rejected yet or just transmit via ERAS?

I have a fear I'd be annoying them by contacting them.

For sure you should contact them. This is different than just bothering them once they've looked at your complete file. This is you letting them know they have a potential candidate in you and they'll very much appreciate that. Notify to them that you applied with incomplete profile and late and you're updating them with the remainder of your profile for interview consideration.

Hi everyone.

I was planning on applying for the 2015 match. I just took step 1 and got a 214..was aiming for at least 230 so i'm very dissapointed. I don't know what my chances are or if I should take the following steps even. For you guys who are going through the process now, do you think that with this score I have a chance of getting interviews?
I'm graduating now and did a month of clinical rotation at Northwestern.
Thanks for your help!

Hi there, I am Brazilian too and I am currently participating in this years match!

218 is not bad, specially been a recent graduate. Good work! Don't forget to do everything prior to sept 15th, so you can apply early. Specially Step 2cs, which sometimes take a decade for the results!

Best

Also some more usce would really add to your cv! IMHO usce and good lors from your usce are more important than scores.

@DrSn: I am so surprised you got these rejections. You are a great candidate. You got an interview at Sinai Grace! How did that interview go for you?

I cancelled 11 interviews today.
I hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the a$$, but there's a limit to how much I can spend on these transatlantic trips. In my heart of hearts, I know I wouldn't be a good match for these programs (for a variety of reasons).

I'd love it if cancelling these interviews translates into opportunities for people on this forum to get their chance.

Hi usmleire. You're awesome! So how many total IVs you received, and how many IVs did you attend? What kind of programs did you cancel? Are they univ progs? Thanks for sharing

Thanks HOTdoc!
I ended up with 23 interview offers total. Cancelled 11, went to 10, and never scheduled 2 of them.
I only applied to university and community hospitals with a university affiliation.

The ones I cancelled were mostly the latter.
St. Luke's, Lankenau, Greenwich, Bridgeport, York, Florida Hospital, Memorial Savannah, New Hanover, Southern Illinois University, UTHSCA San Antonio, Rochester Gen Hospital.
