230(1) // 245(1) // CS(1) // 224(1) // 2011 // 4 Months USCE=2m OBSERVERSHIP(Teaching hospital)+ 2m EXTERNSHIP(American doctor) // J1/H1B // Just started sorting the program.... Need to start working on the personal statement.
Many people around are suggesting to do atleast one month observership at a university hospital, and i'm not sure if I can find one this late.

249(1)/ 243(2)/ 218(3)/ CS(1)/ 2011/ 3 mo Observership with expected 3 LOR's/ Visa required

I have a few questions:
Is it better to call/email programs before & after applying or is it safer to just stick to the protocol?
I am a repeat applicant; applied last year to a few programs before getting ecfmg certified; did it hurt my chances in those programs this year, now that i have a complete application?

Default Suggestion

Guys,

Click on "Customize Profile" and then "Edit Signature" on your profile page in this forum. And then add your scores, YOG, Visa status to that.

I assume this thread will be pretty active all the way up until March 2014 (Well I plan to be active at least). And having that signature will help down the line when / if we get IV calls to know your creds.

Just a suggestion. All the best to everyone !

I was in the same position last year. I had my step 1 score (223) and CS results by August, but was scheduled to give my Step 2 CK in November. I gave it, got my results in December (235), ECFMG Certified by 1st Jan and applied to about 50 programs on the 3rd of January.

Out of those 50 programs, ONLY ONE downloaded my application and offered me an IV in NJ. The program was in a horrible location (Trenton) So I decided not to rank it and try again next year with applying on time and getting USCE and Research experience under my belt.

In retrospect, in my opinion atleast, I should not have applied in January. Not only will no decent program even download your application that late in the match cycle, but it is not worth getting the 'REPEAT APPLICANT' posted on your next year's application (It's actually posted on your application when viewed by the program coordinator)

That's my 2 cents. All the best with whatever you decide.

For graduates with YOG less than 4 yrs, it is better to apply with a complete application next year. You're still safe because most programs have a 5-year cut-off. There is no use risking being a repeat applicant. It will have a huge negative impact on your application, so don't underestimate it. Also, you'll have lots of time to strengthen your CV with more months of USCEs and research. This will translate to having a tremendous competitive edge next year.

Guys!! I was reading the above few comments about people advising others not to apply when the application is incomplete or if applying this year is going to compromise on scores (even if by some 10 points) ..
BUT i was really worried reading articles on Jama about how tough it's gonna get next year..and there would be very few spots for IMgs.. it makes me kinda nervous.
I m fresh grad (yog 2013) done with step1 and CS..and 2 months of clerkship in IM..i was all set to apply this year...but due to some circumstances CK prep got delayed and now I don't think I can take CK..or will score low in that.. really confused what to do..kindly advice me too :sorry:

Hi d_wiqed and Nik7733. Thanks a lot for the input guys!!!
Yea I know it's definitely better to apply with a complete application being an IMG, but also sucks to think you have to wait another year and need to look for more clerkship or research opportunities and all that.

But my biggest question is- are you guys 100% sure that being a repeat applicant looks THAT bad?!? And how do you kno for sure. I mean have you gotten input from people involved in the selection process? Im just really curious. And does your application actually state that you are a repeat applicant?

I guess this will be a big deciding factor..

And aspirant5- We are all in the same exact situation.. really confusing. What JAMA article? And it specifically says next year match? Based on what...

i would suggest you should apply this year . not becoz of the jama article but that you have a green card is a plus point . second you are not as late as Nik7733 , you can apply on Jan 3 as a IMG . he was too late but if you apply on time this year you may have a shot give your ck by september end and inform the programs as soon as you get your result in oct . my friend applied in november with a 245 on step 1 , cs repeat , 223 on step 2 , green card and matched .

i ts upon you to take a chance or not , there is nothing too big in being a repeat applicant but not taking a shot an losing a year would be of no use .

thats my opinion .

goodluck

I know , right! It kills to even think of another one year of anxiety , looking for clerkships and research etc. But again that's I think that it'll be better than applying this year and not getting matched.. A LOT of money will be wasted. PLus time will be wasted too. We could utilise that time to take step 3 and more clerkships. A repeat applicant is sometimes filtered out by some programs...that's what my seniors told me. Anyway once we get done with CK properly ..we will have the entire year to do somethings to improve our CV.

About that JAMA article it mentioned something about 2015 being a watershed (cuz more AMGs will be applying that year) You can pull it out of the internet. Pardon me if I'm talking bullshit.
Let's get in touch and see what all we can do to improve our CV after CK.

What Hitman said is true, Applying as late as Jan 3 made no sense as an IMG. But I too felt like if "I did not give it a shot, how would I know" I did manage to get 1 interview so got some experience out of it at least.

About the 'Repeat applicant' stamp. I know as a matter of fact (I knew an EX program co-ordinator) that when your application is downloaded into the software used by institutions, there is a kind of checklist on the side with variables like "Needs Sponsorship (Y/N)" "Repeat Applicant (Y/N)" "Invite to IV (Y/N)" "Scheduled IV" "Ranked", etc.

BUT, if being a repeat applicant diminishes your chances ? I do not know that. I would think it does, but I personally hope it doesn't.

At the end of the day, gather as many inputs you can, make an informed decision and stick with it. Hope this helps

THANKS to all of you who replied in this matter! Nik7733, Hitman and all the others.

And when i meant applying, I would apply on time with an incomplete application and update it later with scores and ECFMG certificate. Applying any later than October is probably more risky.
In the end, depends if one has the money for that chance and the time and even getting all the required documents ready in time to be able to apply.
I guess I will still ponder on it, in the meanwhile studying for CK and trying to get all the documents.

Thanks and good luck to you guys!

What exactly is the definition of a "repeat applicant"?

-A person who buys a token?

-Or a person who registers with ERAS?

-Or a person who actually applies to the programs?

-Or a person who gets an invite to the interview?

After which stage are you considered a repeat applicant?

I think once you register for an ERAS token during the ERAS 2013 season then you are considered a repeat applicant. Pls see the following excerpts from ECFMG (http://www.ecfmg.org/eras/2014-repeat-applicants.html):

1. "If you participated in the ERAS 2013 season and also participate in the ERAS 2014 season, ECFMG considers you to be a Repeat Applicant. You will be identified as a Repeat Applicant automatically at the time you make an ERAS 2014 Token request via OASIS."

2. "IMPORTANT NOTE: You are a Repeat Applicant for the ERAS 2014 season only if you participated in ERAS 2013; applicants from prior ERAS seasons will not be identified as Repeat Applicants. Additionally, identification as a Repeat Applicant does not apply to residents in training who plan to apply for fellowship programs."

In number 1, it says that the system will recognize you as a repeat applicant once you request for a token...so you don't have to register the token, apply for a program, or get an IV during the preceding ERAS season to be considered a repeat applicant.

That's what I was afraid of.
However, a lot of people told me that I won't be recognized as a repeat applicant until I actually apply?!

Wow guys, I foresee an incredibly fierce Match this year!

In addition to the flood of AMGs from new Med Schools (last year it was something around 1,000 new AMGs).. We IMGs are coming up with stronger applications each year and it's ridiculous the number of 250's, 260's and even 270's by following the Step1 and 2CK forums..

Initially, I was thinking about applying to max o 60 IM programs, but now I'm reconsidering and probably I will end up applying to something around 80-100 programs.. How many programs are you guys considering applying to?

Congrats to everyone for the great scores!! Sometimes I wonder why many IMGs have IM as a "back-up" specialty. I'm applying to IM and it seems pretty competitive to me. Just a thought.

Your awesome LORs will compensate that big time! Particularly in the programs they are from.. You will do great! No doubt about that..

240 (1) / 240 (1) / CS on Oct 16th
3 US LoR's / 1 foreign LoR
~ 6 months observership time but no USCE
YOG: 2013
PhD + 2 postdoc fellowships, 18 publications (bunch of posters, talks, etc.)
U.S. Citizen

Not having CS done yet is a downer, but I'm just going to have to remain optimistic.
I've e-mailed many programs and they seem to be ok with it as long as we're certified by the rank order list deadline.
I'm going to apply to ~ 100 programs (university, community, and community associated with university) and hopefully will get a few interviews from that.

A lot of people come on here and post bogus scores and ridiculous achievements. Don't believe everything you see here.

I have 270 in step 1, 270 in step 2ck, cs pass first attempt, and will take step 3 soon. Phd, and 7 international publications. 2 awards in internal medicine in medical school, and 1 national recognition in sciences.

Yeah, you never can tell who says the truth on here. Welcome to the Internet.

Lets be realistic. lORs can NEVER compensate for average scores. If you have contacts in the program however, that will help. I'm not saying you should lose hope, you will get interviews no doubt. But apply realistically. Don't go to programs requiring 240, cos you will be screened out. Cheers

Did my PhD 1998-2003. Postdoc 1: 2003-2005. Postdoc 2: 2005-2007. Faculty from 2007-2009. Med school from 2009-2013.

I was a researcher before I went to med school. Aside from having an unconventional path to medicine, my past is not that unbelievable!

In actual fact, having that much background (and years) in research is actually a hindrance to the selection process.
I am constantly seen as a 'researcher' when in fact, I want to be judged by my clinical skills, etc. I find it quite frustrating at times to be honest.
I even had to ask my LoR authors to play down the research end of things and concentrate on what they think of me as a doctor (i.e. a real doctor).

The other downside to it is that I have to 'explain' myself by way of personal statement: i.e. why medicine now? Are you going to change your mind again in 4 years? Etc., etc.
Should I be lucky enough to get interviews this season, I fully expect to be grilled on the above issues.

you will get so many Interviews/
specially from program that do not sponsor visa and are IMG friendly, since they do not have the ECFMG certificate at time of application rule.

I agree with you completely! And he will be filtered off a lot of programs.. However, if he's offered any interview, having 2 Chairs sponsoring your application is no small accomplishment. Therefore, in this circumstance, his LORs would compensate his average scores..
I'm sorry if my words sounded too optimistic, but this is my personality and I like to encourage people following their dreams, like our future colleague.. However, your advice is of course more down-to-earth and wiser and it's always better to analyse the 2 sides of the coin before making any decision..
