I am hesitant to share my good news. But this has been a great week for me. Interview season gets mentally tiring sometimes. At least I'm racking up a lot of flyer miles. Hang it there guys!

Default family residency match

here are my credentials-
196(1)/200(2)/cs(1)/2013/USCE
I went to Ross university in the caribbean and completed all my rotations in the US. I know my scores are very poor, I have anxiety issues when I take board exams and my scores don't reflect how much I really know. My CK failure last year blew my chances of applying for match last year So I waited to apply for 2014 match, only going for family medicine figured its the least competitive of all and I can't do psych at all.

I applied to 120 family programs, I have received a bunch of rejections and 1 interview so far. I am really getting worried now its already nov and I am not hearing back from programs like I was expecting. I have spoken to a few people in family residencies and they said programs are interviewing american grads first this year before IMG's so we have to wait until dec or jan to interview.

Any advice, suggestions, opinions would be really helpful?

I am trying to stay positive and patient to the best of my abilities!

Focus on your interview. Do an amazing job. As for expectations of other interviews there is some hope, but it doesn't make sense to sit around and worry about something you cannot control. I've had interviews scheduled from October to early February. You can't really know when programs will grant interviews to IMGs, since this is specific to each program. You are a recent grad with USCE, so I'm sure you must have contacts. Just do your best!

Hey, dont worry too much about the scores, you will be fine... its still early and they are right AMGs first. I know a few ppl in similar situation and they have gotten a 3-4 interview calls... as tenly said focus on interview... practice, get your story and weakness in order... most importantly be hopeful...

Nikki, I got somerset a very long time ago... dont worry too much... rejections are a part of the game focus on what you have...

People lets be positive... we are applying to a specialty that looks at a person as a whole... which takes time... hopefully movember will be a good month...

Default Too late to apply for more progrmas?

Since I have no interview offers and slowly losing hope... do you guy think it may pay off to apply for more programs? or would it be a waste of money/ hit and miss?

I applied to only 50 progrms to being with. my stats are 210 (2), 206 (1), CS (1), IMG Caribbean , US citizen

Rannush,
Did you apply on Sept 15 or later? Did you apply to any other specialties or just FM?

- Yup that makes a difference. Applied late because wasn't happy with my PS and spent more time on it. First patch I applied on Sept 24th to programs in DC/VA/MD with only 2 LORs then slowly added more programs as my writer uploaded a 3rd LOR on Oct 21 specifically for FM.
- None of my writers are FP since I wasn't able to schedule that elective.

- only applied to FM as its the only place I see myself happy and can focus on the whole patient and not get in trouble for doing so. This is truly where I see myself. As a student I always got mean or disappointed looks from residents when I pointed out other issues our patients have and was told "its not ur business"... So I really hope I end up where I belong

Stamford, CT - applied 9/30; (9/30)
VCU, Fairfax VA- applied 9/27; (10/1)
VCU Riverside, Newport VA- applied 9/27; (10/24)
St. Elizabeth, OH - applied 10/28; (10/28)
Virtua, NJ - applied 10/21; (10/29)
South Nassau, NY- applied 10/22 ; (11/1)
Somerset, NJ - applied 9/30; (11/7)

I just noticed that some programs rejected me right away the same day I applied... Interesting. I'm sure they gave my app careful consideration. And all except one are Uni-affiliated.

I purchased the list from IMG interactive but gave me 280 programs to apply for so wasn't helpful for my purposes. Any suggestions of states to focus on with community programs? I'm aiming for rural and doesn't matter if opposed or not at this point but I would love an unopposed program! Thanks!

Some positives in your application are that you're a US citizen. This opens up a lot more programs to you since a lot of programs don't offer visas. However there are a couple of things holding you back. Applying late might put programs off thinking that FM is an afterthought or backup to other specialties. Second, not having an FM letter writer is another obstacle since some programs require one letter writer to be from FM but if the programs you applied to didn't state that, it might be ok. Last thing I can think of is not having an FM elective. This also might portray you as using FM as a backup, even though you clearly are interested in only FM. The other positive in your application is your having 2years of clinical experience in the US.
The only way to augment your weaknesses right now might be to apply to some more programs but I'm not sure how much it'll help at this point in the season. I don't want to lead you astray with bad advice. I hope you'll hear back from some programs soon.

Hi Rannush,

I was in a very similar situation as you last year, however, i have the visa thing against me. But like you i wasnt getting interviews and blindly applied to programs and it didnt help at all. If you are planning to apply to programs at this point dont over do it. At this point most programs are reviewing apps but once they reach their interview quota that would be the end of it e.g if a program has 6 seat they would approx. interview 60 ppl for it. I am going safely assume that most programs have already interviewed around 50% candidates.

Application wise i completely agree with Hongctran: 1) Applying early is a must sept 15th 2) LOR from FM doctor 3) Good PS 4) You need to apply for a lot more programs 50 is very low for an IMG atleast 80-100.

Anyway, that being said the season is not over yet... if you havent recieved an interview doesnt mean you wont get it. Most of my resident buddies have told me that their program are still interviewing AMGs and it is still too early. Dont give up. Best of luck.

Default YOG?

To date I have 5 rejections and three interviews. Just got one from Indiana University, quite surprised. Nothing from any NY programs yet.

If you have more Qs about the skype experience feel free to ask, we're all in this together.

Is it a positive sign (i.e you will be ranked) if you receive a "thank you" letter from a program after the interview? Or is it something programs will do routinely to all interviewees?

Well the good news is that the season is no where even close to be over.... It just indicates that they just started reviewing apps and are behind... i bet you there are tons of programs doing the same thing....

Default Interview experience

Hello guys, i just wanted to say my experience, it was very positive, all the questions are the same as in every other residency interview, why fam med, why us, what do you want out of a program, no direct feed back from the PD, but one of the faculty told me she would be happy to work with me, and she told me she liked that i was very mature and good listener, so u guys... be good listeners LOL, the dinner with residents the night before was extremely friendly, one thing i wish i would have done is write the questions i would like to ask before going in to the interview, because after the third round i was officialy out of questions, and could not think on nothing else.

Can't say if i did good or not, i like to think i did good, but... i don't know, everyone kinda make a funny face when talking about my YOG , but hoping for the best.

Good luck!!!

I didn't get a thank you letter. I've gotten a verbal thank you but a LETTER, NEVER. Good job!

Thank you letters and rejections on Sunday's. This is a new ball game.

Eras2014,
Do you need visa or do you currently have a green card? If its the former, possibly they are sending invites mainly to those who do not need visa. Based on the number of applications you've sent out, I'm surprised you haven't received any IV invites yet. Are you sure your letter writers were able to give you strong letters? Was your personal statement strongly geared towards family medicine? Either way, best of luck and hope to hear some positive news from your direction.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I finished residency in Ortho in 2008 and then moved to USA. I know it is very competitive to get Ortho in USA. I thought my past background will help patients a great deal when I am in primary care field.

I tried and still trying to break the Ortho barrier and gear towards Family medicine. This is first time I am applying for match and for last 8 months I am following 2 physicians in Internal medicine. I am really confused what else I can do to show my interest in primary care. Please let me know if there are any suggestions. Any comments will be highly appreciated.

That's the problem. You're applying to Family Medicine. If you want family medicine then you have to show an interest in family medicine, not general primary care. Your commitment to the specialty is in question. I'm so fed up with people thinking of family medicine as a back-up specialty for people with low scores and not many options. It's an amazing specialty. Get more experience in Family Medicine if you want to get interviews for Family Medicine.

well.. thanks for your reply. Just one correction though, I never thought of family medicine as backup option.

I'm speaking generally. Not accusing you. But Primary Care does not necessarily equate to FM. General internist, etc falls under the primary care umbrella. Since this is not your back up specialty, just wanted to point that out as an important fact.

Words written can appear in a different tone than what i intend , I am writing to you, just trying to give you my point of view/advice, we are all in the same boat, I am studying my own case in case i don't match, what can i do better next year....I think the problems may be the year of graduation, and the ortho specialty, is easy to think your thing is ortho but you are "settling" for FM.

Your personal statement most be very convincing as to why changing specialties, personal experiences and stuff that showed ortho was not for you, and Family medicine is your true love and you wont be changing your mind once you are in.... get experience in FM, IM is a big part of it but is not all, the LOR can come from very prestigious doctors, but what matter is what they had to say about you, no who signed it, are you sure they back you up as a fantastic candidate? can they attest your love for the specialty?, that and other characteristics is what makes a good LOR,

The interview season still going on, and there is still a chance to get IVs soon, so good luck!

Congrats Betiomom!!!!

Eras2014 - It might also be your graduation year -2003? That way more than 5yrs. When did you take your first step? Most states have a 7yr requirement for all 3 steps. You might be cutting close on that too. Its very hard to judge what is on the PD/programs minds... those might be a few reasons.

On the bright note, Awesome Betiomom just got an interview today.. so that means there is still hope and we have a few more wks....

I am starting to give up hope at this point. It is sad, so far i havent heard a single thing from close to 120/152 programs. Currently 3(IV):32 rejections is the ratio for me. So far based on peoples rejections and my last yrs rejections, there are only 8 more programs that are going to send out rejections, the rest are silent that is 112 program give or take 10%. Very scary. SOrry guys i know this is depressing.

I know it's hard. We've only had 4 iv offers and many rejections. Probably close to 40-45 rejections. We applied to 250 programs give or take. So for us that is like a ton of programs that aren't even going to bother giving us the courtesy of a no. We are trying to remain hopeful. It may mean that you are on a waiting list. Not great but better than no hope at all.

If you don't mind me asking; how many interviews did you get last year?

I had zero interviews last yr but I was still in last semester trying to rush through. My application wasn't completed till Nov and my core grades for FM were not even up till Jan. So it was stupid in my part to rush. This year I have very decent LORs, ECFMG certified, took my time with PS. Basically my app is geared for FM and that is all i want to do anyway.

Are you going in for a couples match? you say "we"

No I am not a Doctor. I just use we because this whole medical school/residency has consumed so much of our lives. I feel my husband's disappointment and anxiety as much as he does.

I completely agree with you... it takes a huge toll on family life... But on the brightside, this year when ur husband gets a residency.. life will change for the better and it will only be up and up. Plus, you guys survived the test of time so will come out with an even stronger relationship and more respect...

I wish you and your husband all the best, I have a good feeling for this year...

Thanks. I feel hopeful too! Everyone here has really helped make this process less stressful. I think at the end we should compile a list of the programs that don't send rejections for people applying in later years. I looked but couldn't find much of a list online. Just an idea.

You guys I heard we should email or call to the programs we have not hear from, unless they emailed us saying please do not email LOL, I have not done that because i am scared to annoy people, but at this point I feel i have nothing to lose.

Another Rejection: Banner Good Sam (phnx, Az)

Betiomom - Hahahaaa I did a lot of that last year and to be honest nothing came out of it. There were points where Program coordinators very plain rude. All i said was hi...lol But nothing to loose...

Nikki - I agree about the list but instead of programs that dont send rejections, we should make one for those that do that way there is no mis-information given out. I am keeping a list of my own right now for places that i applied too and ppl have rejections from. Maybe i will start a thread sometime late next wk and we can all contribute.

Nikki- You are not the only wife!!!!! I am too rooting for my husband (and rooting for you too!!) I know how it is; his rejections and all this is so emotional draining. Checking the inbox to see if any new emails have come in and when it does it says "no Reply." At this point we don't even read them and see where they are from because we know it is a rejection lol.

I went to medical school abroad- met my husband- so yay he doesn't have a visa issue because I am a US citizen- I am however studying for my step 1. But of course cannot fully concentrate because of all this residency. Obviously what affects him affects me too.

Hang in there!!!!

Like everyone else says that there is still hope.

This is our first time applying for the match/residency.

Congrats to everyone out there getting interviews.

Congrats Betiomom!!!!

Just stay positive AIR1!!!! And WOW them on the interviews that you did get!!!

Also Tenly quick question-

If you don't mind giving your input- in one of your threads you had posted, you made your application more friendly to Famly Medicine; what exactly does that mean?

My husband has training in internal medicine back home- but his goal is family medicine (no this is not his back up either). He has had observerships but again how do you make the application more "Family Medicine oriented?"

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey All,

I had an interview yesterday as well and also got a good vibe from the program. The program director was really nice and so even went as far as asking him Y he chose me for an interview? So here are some remarks, maybe help people improve their application for the future

- He looks for a complete app. All steps done.
- After you graduate, you are not sitting around but rather are doing something to improve you application. Volunteering, research anything. In my case, I was doing an externship at a clinic close to my house.
- My LORs are from people who are in the FM. He mentioned that there are some people who send me LORs from IM dr. which go as far as say "I highly recommend him, he would be a great IM dr." This is a big turn off for FM drs.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if it is a good idea to start emailing programs at this point? Last year it didnt do much for me. Everything is delayed by 1wk this year compared to last. Any opinion or anyone have any luck with sending emails?

I did send emails to programs about 1 month ago per advices from Kaplan and MatchAResident (4 wks-6wks after sending the application). Most of them do not reply. One said I was rejected. One said receiving emails would make their selection procsess slower. When did you send emails to programs last year?

I sent them last year around this time or early dec. Pretty much had the same response. I even made phone calls in january and people dont answer their phones and have msgs "dont ask us about your status".

Honestly, from my previous experience I am very discouraged and i didnt think it made a difference at all. Unless you know someone directly, i dont even think it made a single one look at my app. My impression has been that most have already done their screening at this point either you are not getting an interview or are on waiting/cancel list.

That being said people are still getting interviews so i am going to remain hopeful.

Do you guys suggest we call or email programs that we haven't heard a response from? I haven't received any IV's and I'm getting discouraged as most other students in a similar situation are. Based on my stats, what do you guys think I should do?

It is surprising to me since YOG 2013 and 2 yrs USCE are a great fit for FM. How many rejections have you got so far? If not so many, chances are still there!

At the moment I have received 37 rejections. Do you think there may be some red flag in my application? The only two issues I could think of are low board scores and a 6 month gap for usmle step 1 preparation.

What do you guys think?

Personally, I do not think low board scores are red flags for FM given the match statistics of previous years. I do not know the gap of 6 months (during medical school?) is significant enough. Might it be the way you select 120 programs out of over 400 FM ones out there? Or your LORs do not come from FM physicians or they do not recommend you to FM specifically?

Hey Phat Bastard (love the name),

How many programs did you apply too? Taking into account u need a J1, you could only apply to approx. 250 programs total out of 400. FM programs have started to screen based on scores but its not many. I am in a similar boat as you but with a little higher scores. I have also gotten 37-40 rejects so far, I still have about 50% who have not replied. I got 3 interviews so far and not a single one has asked me about the scores. I dont think that is the problem. I think the major thing with FM is visa, they prefer locals cause most tend to stay and practice in the region.

GOOD News is I just got off the phone with one of my resident friends and she told me that all her FM interviews came late last year around Dec to as far as Jan 21st. This my 3rd resident friend who has told me that. THis year everything is 1wk ahead, so FEB 1st is last day of no-more hope.

FOR YOU, at this point you should start calling/emailing places cause you have nothing too loose. But you will need an excuse to call them. IF you are still in school, tell you school to update ur transcript and call on that basis. Call to areas you prefer to be at.

REDFLAG you should check in your app:
1) I REALLY hope you applied early (sept15-16). FM people dont like late apps cause they come across as backup.
2) FM people dont like LORs from other specialties e.g IM especially if they say "I recommend him for a career in IM". ATLEAST 2 FM and rest could be whatever.
3) PS doesnt sound convincing for FM
4) Electives in FM is a very positive sign.

Everything else is not in ur control and dont worry, its not too late.

Thank AIR1! By mentioning December-January, I hope you mean time of invitations, not time of interviews. I have only 2 invitations by now and will keep hoping

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess I will continue to wait and stay hopeful. I fulfilled most of the criteria you mentioned in terms of redflags; applied sept 18th, 2 fm + 1 ob/gyn LOR, PS geared towards fm, and 3 additional electives in fm.

I'm awaiting my ecfmg certification which should arrive by next week. Do you think that could be a good reason to use to call certain programs I'm interested in and let them know I'm ecfmg certified?

I got it now! It's all because you have not got ECFMG certificate yet. Let programs know and what will be will be Best of luck!

PHAT BASTARD: Yes ECFMG Certification is a great reason to call programs. Start making a list of programs you want to call and what your are going to say like conversation points (family, friend in area, interests etc). What ever you do make sure you dont hang up the phone without SPELLING your name or AAMC#.

For last interview invite was Jan 21. I remember getting my last rejection last yr around 7 Feb. SO they do continue to review till late. This year Rank list is due 21 FEb.

OHH the good thing about FM compared to other specialties, its very personalize. They only interview 60 ppl for 6 seats, UNLIKE IM programs which are very malignant and interview b/w 150ppl for same amount of seats. My friend had an interview at a hospital which interviewed 350+ ppl for 10 seats. Which is ridiculous, how can they actually get to know the candidate. FM is not like that and you matter. SO even with 1-2 interviews you have a great shot of matching. So dont get discouraged if you have one interview. Makesure you are yourself which is very important. TO give you more hope, i have a friend who only had one interview last yr and he matched there.

Hi. In regards to LORS I came to realize that one of the ones I used mentioned that "I have an aptitude for IM but would succeed in any program". The remaining letters are from FM. How badly would this have affected my chances? My PS is entirely geared twd FM. Any thoughts?

Nikki - I didnt apply for st. cloud thats y no rejection...

EDM1- I think the best way is to gauge the answer is by looking at how many interviews you have. I dont know your stats so cant really tell you. But if you are getting interviews, then programs dont care cause you app is good enough. That being said in my last interview I told the PD that I was a part of online forum and would like to pick his brain, he told me that he did not really like statements like "He would be great in IM", as an FM dr he finds that to be a turnoff. I think it is better to be cautious and attach another lor or get you letter writer to edit the letter.
