EDM1- I think the best way is to gauge the answer is by looking at how many interviews you have. I dont know your stats so cant really tell you. But if you are getting interviews, then programs dont care cause you app is good enough. That being said in my last interview I told the PD that I was a part of online forum and would like to pick his brain, he told me that he did not really like statements like "He would be great in IM", as an FM dr he finds that to be a turnoff. I think it is better to be cautious and attach another lor or get you letter writer to edit the letter.
Hi. Stats are: yog 2013. Step 1: 216(1 attempt), ck:238
(1 attempt) CS pass first attempt. All clinicals in states and Canada. 1 research. Ecfmg certified. Need j1. Not having a lot of luck with IVs. Up until now I thought the j1 was my biggest obstacle. For majority of programs I used 3 letters (2 FM and 1 IM which was general in nature) and for almost half of programs I used 4 letters including the one mentioning IM.

Hi EDM1,

I am in the same boat as you... a canadian as well, same usce experience (no canada) but much worst scores. Up to date I only have 3 interviews. The amount of interview is very low, compared to my american friends with similar or way way worst stats. I contribute it to J1 visa requirement. Do you have any interviews? Did you apply in FM only or IM as well? lol just by our exchange right now i can tell you have applied to IM...lol... When you say ur app is FM, do you have electives in FM? You should have some interviews....

So I've applied to 102 programs. 90 FM and 12 IM. I applied to the IM programs mostly because I wanted to match in a specific state but my focus is def FM. I only have one IV and it's IM and it was at the hospital where I did majority of my clinicals so I'm known by the attendings. Otherwise nothing so I'm pretty worried and trying to figure out what the problem is. I've emailed some programs and have been told that they are either still reviewing or I am on hold or a rejection. I have a 6 week rotation in FM and then a 4 week primary care elective in Canada. The rest of my electives were pretty general (cardio, nephro etc)

Hmm... when did you get ECFMG certified? I was certified before sept 15th so my app was complete when it went in.... that might be the big difference... I only had 3 early interview invites by 1st wk of oct and then nothing else.

I believe them when they say that they are still reviewing apps.... Just hold on you should get some soon. I think you app is very good and other than J1 visa... there is no other red flags.... Even with J1 visa you should still get 5-7 interviews. FM interviews come up to end of JAN. Just hold on....

OK... here is the process:
- Interviews to AMGs (including DO) first
- Interviews to USIMGs second
- then interviews to all other IMGs.

Based on STATs, there are close to 26000 residency spots, 62% are filled by AMGs. That leave 9880 seats for IMGs. Now for FM there are 9000 spots and only 45% AMGs applied.. that leaves 55% or 1677 spots for IMGs. Last year there was a total of ~5450 applicants total for FM. You take out 6-8% ( ppl who applied to early and are not eligible, another 25% who applied as back up. SO to put it in numbers were close to 2910 IMGs - 872 (ineligible/backup app) = 2037 IMGs (~2000).

So basically for 1677 spots available you are competing with 2000 real applicants. What that means is If you are a real FM applicant, who truly wants FM... you have ~84% chance of matching in FM. AND if you are a pessimist like myself you have 70% chance of matching in FM. I think those are amazing odds.

Now i can give you negative numbers like as an IMG you need 11 IVs to match, but they are not realistic cause only excellent FM candidates like Tenly (on this board) get IV numbers like that. If you graph it the distribution wont be a bell curve but rather positively skewed. That makes the "11" a false number. According to my calculations you need 7.7 IV to match as an IMG.

But those are just stats and they are stupid cause they dont account for outliers like 1 IV & match or 20 IV & match etc etc....

lol this is email is a good example of who we all need to pick up hobbies/jobs... sorry guys...

I only personally know 1 person, a 4th-year student in an American D.O. program, who acquired more than that, 5 interviews.

Congrats Betiomom.

I am feeling pretty down this week as we haven't had much activity at all. I feel like with only 3 interviews our chances aren't very good for matching. My hubby is getting applications out for Master's in Health Administration programs, as a back up. It stinks to think that it's possible he made it this far and will never get to realize his dream of practicing medicine.

I hope others are doing and feeling better. Sorry if this post is a downer. Just needed to get those feelings off my chest.

Anybody have an interview at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Northern Kentucky? Or heard anything about this program?

that's my only interview thus far.

looks to be an amazing university program though with a sports medicine fellowship.
but all their residents seem to be AMGs, so i probably have little shot.

anyways, lets see what happens.

@ nikki-

Just hang in there and be patient. You never know if your husband matches in one of the interviews he has. Everything will work out!

Good luck to everyone!

Default About interviews

My stats are step 1 196(1st attempt) step 2 200 (2nd attempt) CS passed 1st attempt. US citizen. graduated June 2013.
Caribbean student from Ross University and I did all my rotations in the US. Thus far I only have one interview scheduled in NJ for the end of Jan. I have applied to 120 family medicine programs and received about 30 rejection emails. I called up a bunch of other programs who said no because of my 2nd attempt in CK. I know that is a big red flag Some programs are still reviewing applications. I don't know if I should apply to a few more family programs now, if that will increase my chances of getting interviews? Any suggestions would really help, I am feeling very hopeless at this point.

I would have applied to Peds if I had known family would be so competitive this year. But now its too late I don't even have any LORS from peds and my whole application/ PS are geared towards family.

Any advice would greatly be appreciated? what I should do if I don't match? As of now I don't have a plan B of what to do next year in case i don't match?

@beingpatient - I would recommend taking step 3 and improving your CV. Programs are most likely worried about your not being able to pass step 3 during residency so getting it out of the way and doing well on it would definitely help. Then reapply broadly next year. Do you mind sharing which program in NJ you got the interview at?

In his image tulsa oklahoma

I am sorry that we cannot offer you an interview at the In His Image Family Medicine Residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Our schedule is already overbooked and we cannot fit in any more even if one or two cancel. But if we have positions open after the match in March you are invited to contact us at that time.

So i guess for SOAP i could contact them...

196(1)/204(1)/CS(1)/2013/2 years USCE/J1 required.
Applied to 120 FM programs
Hey your credentials are so close to mine: 196(1), 200(2) cs(1) /2003/ 2yr US clinical rotations and US citizen. My failed attempt in CK makes things worse. The only thing going for me now is that I don't require a visa. I have been calling programs and emailing for the past few weeks, honestly I don't think it really helps. At this point programs are fully booked and they just keep saying no to everyone that calls, in fact now they don't even answer their phones. I don't know about you but that frustrates me even more when I make the effort to call/email and they don't even have the courtesy to reply back. Plus after calling a bunch of programs and hearing no all day doesn't help either. For now all we can do is hope for the best and see what the next few weeks has to offer; and keep each other motivated.

I have been calling programs for a few weeks now. A lot of them do not answer. I have not received any interviews either.

Default Rejections for the week :(

@beingpatient14 - DO NOT APPLY for anymore FM programs, it is way too late for it this year. Just hang in there. Regarding your attempt, i know a few people with attempts and they all have atleast 3-4 interviews, so dont worry too much about it. If you graduated you need to be doing some sort of work, volunteer at clinic or anything. You need to look at your PS and do observership in a place with residency program.

@beingpatient14 - i know someone in somerset NJ, people are very nice at the program from what I have heard. Makesure you are honest and genuine. Dont over rehearse questions. Also, no one is going to ask you about your board scores but regardless have an excuse. Makesure you have an answer for why FM? someone is going to ask you at some point. ANY interviews you get book them right away dont book them in january. You want to keep jan open for short notice interviews.

@beingpatient14, @jasonb123 -REGARDing taking step 3, it does not matter for FM because all FM residents score high in step 3 and pass. SO it wont benefit your app for FM (told by few FM PDs). If you do plan to apply to any other program, then step 3 makes a different.

@betiomom - In him Image (same email), PENN hershey, UT houston, Summa health..

Anyway, just finished my last interview yesterday. Just got home.. really tired so I apologize if some sentences dont make sense...

@AIR1- Thank you for the advice it's good to hear that people have 3-4 interviews even with failed attempts. I hope I get them soon as well. I don't know if you mentioned it in previous threads but which programs did you recently interview in? If you don't mind sharing?

See this is what I don't get. How are ppl with multiple attempts getting 3-4 interviews but me with my first time passes on all the steps only got one? . If I don't match this year, I'll definitely make sure to apply on the very first day that apps come out and have step 3 and ecfmg certificate ready.

I am ECFMG certified and I applied September 15th and I still don't have any interviews. It seems like it's all luck!

My husband had his last interview today. He felt pretty good about it. They asked him to come back for a second look. I don't know if this is a good sign, but I'm hoping it is. Anyway we are praying that everyone matches.

We got a rejection from Resurrection Health Center today in Chicago. I thought they had already rejected us. I guess they needed to do it again so that we are sure they don't want my husband.

We are pretty resigned to the fact that we have received all the offers we are going to receive. Praying one of those works out.

Good luck to all.

People with attempts and interviews, did you guys explain the fail in your personal statement? I did and maybe that's my downfall

It's too late to take it out now

I explained it because I applied to programs that allow attempts and on some program websites, it stated that attempts should be explained in personal statement. I assumed if programs didn't want attempts I would get filtered out anyways before they even read my personal statement.

-Rejection from UT San Antonio
-Thank-you note from a resident that interviewed me one month ago. I had received one from the associate program director right after the interview. They are so professional.

Default Match 2014

What are people planning to do for the next year if they don't match? At this point with only one interview on my hand I figured I would have to start thinking ahead. I would be devastated if I have to wait another year to match but I can't change the circumstances now. I was thinking I need a job in a medical office or something but those are hard to get without any connections, as is research. In the meantime I will just study for Step 3. Any ideas, or connections would help?

For me that would be the last year of medicine... i will be looking for an alternate career... Cant sit around wasting time and money hoping for a residency to come through.. when i know its harder each year... better to build a simultaneous career as you wait...

I did not match last year so this is my second go at it... and i have already max all my medicine venues/contacts... I had 4 interviews this time so hoping something will come through....

For not matching... it was a dreadful year in the beginning... but got better... remember you only have till sept 15 to build your resume... make sure all your experiences/exam/jobs are before... after which point app gets locked up... I worked at a FM clinic close to my place to keep busy... volunteer off course... no one minds free help.... worst part of not match is all the free time.. I would write more but i think at this point its more productive to think positive.

If it looks like you are not going to match.. make sure your PS are ready for the soap... last yr there was only <5 FM spots... alot of prelim surgery, very few peds and a few OB.... so my point is if you are open to any other field... get your letters and ps ready.... I am only for FM so not going to bother... let me know if you guys have any specific questions..

@2010DOC - Yes volunteering at the clinic helped me a lot. A PD in my interview told me that he was happy to see that i was working at a clinic... most people dont make an effort.... Regarding an LOR... my preceptor offered one but I didnt need it..

Regarding...should u apply for surgery prelim... its up to you.. if that is your interest... Dont do it out of desperation.... Doing a surgery prelim could get you prescription rights/licencing in some states... and open doors for advanced positions like anesthesia and radio...... but it can also close doors for you in other residencies... FM, pscyh, IM.. they would look at you with a grain of salt... So in the end it come down to you and your interest..... and pro/cons...

HI AIR1. I just want to say that I do not agree with what you said about doing things out of desperation.

I am not ashamed to admit that I am desperate to get a residency spot in the US because I would rather become a doctor in the specialty that i do not like rather than become a taxi driver, a staff at mc donald's, or a businessman just because I did not get matched. I believe I was born to become a doctor. I know no other professions except medicine.

I would rather be matched in whatever specialty in medicine even though it's not my first choice rather than working as something else and not as a doctor. It would be a waste of so many years of sleepless nights of studying medicine and waste of so much money if I would not be able to practice medicine at the end of the day. Not only that, it's a big failure to myself if I do not become a full pledged doctor in the US.

It is easier to like a specialty that you hated most during med school than to like a non-medical career. I've always wanted to become a doctor and not something else. I don't see myself doing another kind of job other than seeing patients.

CALL IT DESPERATION BUT IT'S DESPERATION TO STAND UP TO MY VOCATION AS A MEDICAL DOCTOR - THE DREAM AND ASPIRATION OF MY CHILDHOOD, THE THOUGHT OF WHICH SUSTAINS MY EXISTENCE.

Ok first of all there is nothing wrong with being a taxi driver or staff a mcdonalds or a business man... if any of those guys were drs and ended up in that career its because they had too not because they wanted too... not because they gave up... but rather a huge debt, family to feed and pay bills..... Sometimes you have to sacrifice your dream...

For me... my medical school cost be $200,000.... each year application costs run up to $2-$4000.... add volunteer work, research hr etc.... what bank in their right mind would keep giving me loans.... life came to a dead stop... if i date someone, i cannot consider a serious relationship cause of the huge financial hole i would drag someone into.... so i am suppose to put everything to a dead stop just cause i cant find a residency.... keep trying year after year cause of my love for medicine....

You think its not my dream to become a Dr.... there is a huge difference between dreams and reality.... especially when you are running on borrowed money....

SO I NOTICED I OFFENDED YOU... WHICH I APOLOGIZE FOR... BUT BEFORE YOU START THROWING OUT "MY DREAM"... KNOW THIS... EVERYONE OF US WHO ARE ON THIS FORUM.. IS HERE BECAUSE OF OUR "DREAMS".... AND DONT EVEN THINK FOR A SECOND THAT WE DONT WANT A RESIDENCY..... IF I READ YOUR DESCRIPTION CORRECTLY YOU WERE ALREADY DOING A RESIDENCY IN YOUR COUNTRY... WHICH MEAN YOU WERE ALREADY A PRACTICING DR.... THAT SHOULD HAVE SATISFIED "UR CHILDHOOD" DREAMS AND ASPIRATION....

LASTLY, GROW UP AND LEARN TO TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY....

Default Can you give me an opinion?

Hi guys, I want to ask for your opinion, I received a couple of letters from a program director saying they want me to rank them high, because they want me to match there, and they will rank me high, first I don't know if that is a "legal " request to make", and second, I love the program but is number 2 in my list only because I have a program closer to home.

So my problem is, what should I answer to that? I don't want to lie and say yes you are my number one, but I dont want to miss in the opportunity, what if is the only program that will even rank me....

Seriously I tough a lot about asking this here, since we are all struggling, but, I really don't know what to do.

Does rank high mean top 5? So even if you rank them number 2 it should be ok because you still ranked them high

I know a friend who matched with her number 2 so I think you will be ok.

First of Betiomom that is awesome...

Ok now, you should be cautious with these and take it with a grain of salt. I had a friend last year who got a letter similar to that from u of minnesota last year.. she ranked them as her number one choice based on the letter and guess what she matched at her last choice.. number 7....

Regarding ranking, you alway rank the place according to your preference and so if this program is your number 2 choice... so it is....

The letter you got from the PD... you should definately reply to it saying " Thank you so much for your note... I am also very interested in your program and am planning to rank your program high" (something along those line).... It is not illegal to say you are planning to rank them high... but it is if you specify a number (#1 choice)..... And you are not lying or deceiving anyone... there is a reason y there is a double blind (match system).. Also, programs dont have feelings...they have been doing this for years and have seen everything... Remember goal is to match...

Also take this into consideration, an average program has 6 seat for example... Student 1-6 is programs number 1 choice. Student 7-12 is now their 2,3,4,5,6 choice. My point is when a program says high, you can be their 15th choice and still be considered high.

Question: were the notes by email or mail?

Hey ugk83. I got 5 IV 4 FM 1 IM, Applied to close to 100 FM and close to 20 IM. Honestly 4 out of the 5 interviews I got are in areas where the population is mainly spanic, and all the applicants speak spanish, most of the residents are IMG,s so, I think it was a reason for my IVs

I got that application a while back when I first applied in September 15. My friend got rejected from all of UM in one email a month after September 15. I haven't received any rejections yet. So maybe they are still considering.

Anyone can correct me if I am wrong on this but you cannot take public transportation there. You should either take your car or rent a car. It's in the south side of Chicago and so be safe. Residents run that hospital so it's a pretty malignant hospital program from what I have heard. I have never rotated there but I know people who have. Give yourself plenty of travel time to go there because the freeway towards the south side is unpredictable at times. It will also depends where your hotel will be. Good luck!

its the last place you will like to do residency but its better than nothing. the place is completely run down and its not in the safest neighborhood but i have never heard of any attack on any staff. south side Chicago is known for its high rate but JPH is actually not in the crime infested south side..you will see for yourself though

as per transportation, cta has a bus stop right in front of the hospital but i dont know the bus no that will get you there. i advise you google search it.

also use the midway airport since it very close.ohare is quite far.
goodluck

It's the area. I have heard of attacks on my friends. No one leaves the hospital after dark so they just stay over and leave in the morning.

The CTA and red line will take you there but it's not ideal if you want to make it on time for your interview. I took the bus to Roseland hospital and I was always late

OMG....which of your friends told you that they dont leave the hospital after dark? i dont like it when people over exaggerate. Its a wrong assumption that its not safe because it's in South side. i live very close to JPH but on lakeshore drive for over 2yrs now, i come home late and have even stopped at walgreens opposite JP late at nights, i have never heard of any attacks either.
@tuflife, i applied there too but it would have definitely been very low on my ROL if they had invited me. ask questions from current residents when you get there but i advise you take midway and rent or take a cab. i have never used public transportation in Chicago but its 2nd best after NY.

I don't think she exaggerated because she got so frightened and never went back for the remainder of her rotation. Ever since then security started to walk the med students to their cars when leaving at night and girls started car pooling. This was about 2010 so the area may have gotten better.

Again this was one incident. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Just what I was told. It could have been just that one bad luck for her.

thanks for this detailed input. i would say facing any kind of a bad event is mostly a matter of time , people are attacked in jersey too but again it once in a while but i would say its better to keep this in mind and be vigilant. And yup i ll go to midway and i am plannning to stay in ramada lake shore drive, cuz thats the nearest and ofcourse the cab woulb the best option for interview day .

Default Just venting

I know we are almost done with interviews, I personally have a couple left, but wanted to share the questions that have been the most difficult to me.

Tell me about yourself

What is your passion

What do you like to do on your time off ( I have kids... I like to sleep...)

What does (any psychological hidden question) professionalism, community medicine, responsibility, excelence, leadership... means to you....

Tell me about a personal conflict... I yell at my husband, yell at my siblings, do whatever my Mom and aunts want, tell on the nurses LOL...... that is how I resolve conflict, so obviously I have to lie....

Anyway, I have been very busy and I had a couple minutes today so wanted to vent and say, I hate interviews....
REady to get it over with, Good luck everyone!

Default post match

step 1(196)(1), CK (200) (2), CS passed 1st attempt, US citizen, YOG 2013, all US rotations

Hello, I have one up coming interview in somerset NJ end of Jan. This will be my only interview this season, although I have applied to 120 family programs doesn't seem like I will match this year. My only hope is the somerset program. Since interview season is practically over and Match day is approaching soon I wanted to get ideas for plan b next year. Any suggestions anyone has about any research I can do anywhere? I would prefer to work in a doctor's office and get paid because I have to start paying back all my loans and wasting another year for match won't help my financial situation. Does anyone know somewhere that is quick to hire graduated students temporarily ? Any ideas of how to improve my CV for next year would really be helpful. Since family medicine was so competitive this year I would probably be considering to apply to Peds as well as family next year.

Hello, Focus on do good at your interview, don't waist any energy trying to think what is next, research the program, practice questions, and get a good positive mind, at least until the interview day is over, after that, I don't know if because you did rotations in US you could have more oportunities, but what I came across is

http://arma-cert.org/prequalification

You send your documents and they registry you as medical assistant and you can get a job with that, I also heard you can be "medical scribe" some hospitals are using them and they train you, you would have to google it, also you can be a doctor in cruise ships doing botox injections

those are the ones I have been researching since those are the ones I would "qualify" for, but, If you put your resume in one of those health employement web pages, you could browse what they have, there are paid fellowships for research and research assistant, it depends on your qualifications. I am guessing you might have different ones depending on your licensing, school, experience, etc, do a good search in google, there are a couple, not much, but is worth to research AFTER your interview I would advice. Good Luck!!
