It is really weird there is some serious discrepancy in the numbers of family medicine total number of applicants. First off all it says 2014 match results.. it should be 2013 (table 1)... already predicting the future...lol

Second this it says in table one that the total number of FM applicants were 4096, where as the original report released by NRMP after match said 5946. That is a huge discrepancy. Someone is sleeping at work. Below is the link to original report:

http://b83c73bcf0e7ca356c80-e8560f46...nddata2013.pdf

I definitely prefer these new numbers, gives me more hope. I sent NRMP an email regarding it, lets see.

I know it was emailed to everyone. I am comparing the data from the "charting outcome for img" to the link above in my post "2013 Main Residency Data" and there is a discrepancy in the numbers. NRMP messed up.

@betiomom thanks for the links seems like you have a lot of resources. I thought the cruise ship spa job for physicians is really interesting. Getting paid for being on a cruise and giving people injections sounds awesome lol! But I don't have a license; its probably more for international doctors that already have a license from their own country right?

The prospects are very good no matter what residency you do. During my interview run, I came across a lot of canadian FM that are planning to come back and few of them that are already practicing here. It really depends what province you are from. Ontario has the best rule right now.

My ex-boss his son did an IM residency in states, I just found out that he matched for nephro fellowship in UofT. So the door is open for now but no idea how the policy changes in the next 2 - 3yrs. Sadly enough medicine no matter where the states or canada is more influenced by politics and monetary.

Congrats Betiomom... At this point its about increasing match statistics... the more IVs the better than chance for match right.... dont worry too much about the cancellation part... make the most of it...

What are chances for 209(1), 230 (1) , CS passed Green card holder IMG in FM or Psych? I am planning to participate in 2015 match.. No obsie so far..where should I apply for obsie for which specialty? Better chances for Psych or FM?.. Which is the best place to go for obsie in psych or FM to go for ?

Sorry Drindia, I don't know the answer to your questions, all specialties are very competitive lately, and unless you have outstanding scores, all your resume, LOR, experience etc etc is taken into consideration, Obsies I have no idea i did it in private clinics close to my home. If I was in your place I would just choose the specialty I like most between psyq and FM, and get obsies and LOR on that one, because I think they are both equally competitive this days.

You're supposed to show up by 7:30 in the morning for morning report which happens in the Assembly Hall. Interviews may not start until the afternoon. Usually the interviewees just wait around till they're called. But expect to be there until about 4:30-5 with lots of downtime.

Thank you so much for your reply RR00. This long IV day seems like a serious issue with me now. I have another IV right next day at Geisinger Medical Center in PA. I think if the IV ends any later then 2PM I can't make to PA since the latest flight out for PA leaves at 4:15 pm. Any suggestions on what should I do in this situation?

Tell them that early on. I'm not sure what they'll do to accommodate you but whatever you do, don't miss that flight to the next interview. And if you're going to O'Hare, it's at least an hr by taxi. Not sure about Midway.

There is a LOT of downtime so maybe if you tell them you have to catch a flight, they'll make things move faster hopefully. Good luck! Also the area nearby is unsafe. Don't flash your phone or any expensive bags. Try to hide any expensive labels.

Default Hard but true.

I just came to the realization, and a sad reality check, that all those thank you emails and thank you cards, and we hope you like us, we look forward to work with you in the future, please consider us for your training, is a bunch of LIES, it seems the same we lie to them they lie to us, an insider told me I am not even near to the top 50 of a program that sent me at least 4 pieces of very reassurance correspondence..... DIRECTLY form the PD, who knew they have the time to keep up with people they don't even like.... I knew I was not the number one choice but for sure I thought I had a real shot....I wish they didn't lift our hopes up if they don't really mean it. sad sad day for me

Betiomom relax... It all part of the game.... Match is a very unpredictable process... i know this one program where the last person on the list matched. They interviewed 200 people and they match their 200th choice... so you never know.

I got a very similar news a few week back from an insider telling me the samething... Since then i called the program for second look... showing interest and sent an email to pd expressing interest and that i will be ranking them very high... that is pretty much all you can do...

Dont let all this bring you down... smile... cheer up.. you have a good amount of interview and you will match... best part you will match at a place that wants u the most....

One more month of all this BS and we are done....

Thank you Air1, you always so wise , I wonder if we are talking about the same program lol, I am sooo tired, and all this bad energy will do me bad for my upcoming interviews, imagine i Don't match with 6 interviews, I would be so discourage and embarrased, but anyway I will try to shake it off, things will get better. thank you.

Default Well now I feel anxious again.

My husband also has received emails and letters in the mail saying how much the programs like him. He was even offered second looks at two of the places he interviewed with. I was happy thinking that maybe we would actually match with so few interviews. Now after reading that programs send those to everyone I feel so defeated again. Why would programs do that? It's really dishonest. Why can't the process be more transparent and honest? We would rather know where we truly stand with a program. It's not like lying to us is going to change our rank list so it seems to be really mean and a colossal waste of time for everyone involved. Boy this makes me so mad. Anyway had to vent about that.

Also Betiomom and Air1 how did you get someone to tell you where you are in the rank list? I thought that was a violation of the nrmp rules. I wish we knew ahead of time where we stand since I now know that correspondence with a program is meaningless. Can my husband d ask and expect an honest answer?

Hi Nikkilang80, I am sorry that my post affected you, I just wanted people to be aware of how meaningless this emails are, however I hear some programs offer second looks to everyone, and other programs offer second look to their top choices, so that might actually be a good sign for your husband, and I really hope so, I have asked people around and they dont think is a good idea to ask the program where you stand, see all this is really weird, because i think is a fair question but apparently a no no, so I would be happy with second look invite I have not have any of those.

Good luck

QUOTE=betiomom;237245]Hi Nikkilang80, I am sorry that my post affected you, I just wanted people to be aware of how meaningless this emails are, however I hear some programs offer second looks to everyone, and other programs offer second look to their top choices, so that might actually be a good sign for your husband, and I really hope so, I have asked people around and they dont think is a good idea to ask the program where you stand, see all this is really weird, because i think is a fair question but apparently a no no, so I would be happy with second look invite I have not have any of those.

Good luck[/QUOTE]
You don't have to apologize. I needed to know the truth. It's better because I won't go in with unrealistic expectations for the match. I know if we match it will be a miracle.
Thanks for the advice on asking programs about where he stands. He will not even attempt it now. He will just let them know that he's interested in them and leave it at that. He will not lie though. I just think its disrespectful for either side to do that. I was wondering how you found out that you aren't being ranked very high?

I sent you a private message explaining to you, I think it went to your regular email, not the private message set in here.

- OK first off... you all did fine in your interviews, so dont panic that is the most important thing....

- Rank order list - do it as your preference.. if you liked a program rank them number 1... dont worry about what the program ranks you... it is pointless... Program ranking are very confidential and no one knows expect the people who do the ranking that means Program director and program coordinator...

- Residents tell you something, its just their hunch or what they heard... they dont know... they are always off... trust me... IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE TO KEEP COMMUNICATION WITH THE PROGRAM.. that is thank you emails and email of interest blah blah... keep yourself fresh in their minds...

- Pds alway tweek the rank list all the way too the end...

- AT this point dont doubt yourself... if you know your interview went well then it did... dont over think it... if you connected with someone at the program.. sent them an expressing your interest in the program.. doesnt have to be a Pd, it can be any attending or resident... Keep doing what you are doing.....

If it makes you feel better, I did not receive a single thank you note or email.. except a couple second look offers... I went to one.. and guess what people knew my name and remembered me.... that was a good sign... all i needed... ALso remember, not all programs offer secondlooks... so you dont hear from one... it doesnt matter....

We have come so far, it would be sad to throw all the hard work away panic and do something stupid... relax... enjoy your time with your families... in my case watch tv...lol

Betiomom I think I sent you a private message. I am shockingly internet illiterate so I could be wrong. Let me know if you didn't get it.

Default texas interview

I received a surprise interview from UT San Antonio family medicine program in texas two weeks ago. They called and asked if I can come in the next day. I am currently living in Austin Tx and it was driving distance so I was able to go. The program is full of IMG's, lots of carribbean grads and better yet they have 13 spots for PGY-1, bigger than most programs. They had a 2nd look brunch the following week which I was invited to as well. I really liked the program and I hope to match there. But the PD did say they interviewed 140 applicants for the 13 spots so there is a lot of competition. I was just happy to get the interview, being originally from NY i didn't think i would get an offer from TX! I sincerely hope the match works out for everyone!

PS If i have to participate in the SOAP what kind of positions should people in family med take? prelim? transitional? I mean I would take any spots at the point better than not matching. any opinions?

Thanks for sharing and good luck!!,
I don't know about the soap, I hear most of the spots last year were in surgery?? and people saying like taking those would hurt your chances in family med, but I think like you, and I would take anything, preliminary or transitional, people in the programs should understand it was the better option...

Default Finally good news to me :)

Hi all, I just wanted to share a little positivity for me, since I have been nothing but stress and negativity lately... I just came back for an interview and I thought I did my worst performance ever, one interviewer tear down my application in million pieces and discover I messed up the dates on my work experiences, I would tried to explained certain things that did not made sense to her because my school is different system than here and she just looked at me like she did not believed a word and just would said, "that is weird". the other asked me a lot of medical questions and I got a couple wrong, he look at the floor and said NO!!! that question is in every exam!! how can you don't know that!!!, the next one right in the middle of the conversation told me I talk to much anyway I was convinced I had no chance, but I got good feed back today and invite for a program activity next weekend, and not everyone is invited so,

I am happy, even if I don't match my biggest fear is that I am just ridiculing myself and I am not ready for residency, or that at least that is the impression I give to people, a little reassurance that "hey you could work here" is very very welcomed!! today is a good day for me. Wishing the best for everyone else

@betiomom; sounds like you had a brutal panel interview. But congrats that you were invited back despite that! glad you are staying positive throughout all this as we all should. Feeling down about a bad interview will only lead us to lose our self confidence.

Wow that is the first time I have heard of an interview like that in FM. That is just plain mean but the fact that they gave you positive feed back means they were just testing you... see if you keep your cool... Good job... It almost all over... another 20days... then no more emails or kissing butt... just waiting for match day...

Hey I just wanted to see you how everyone is doing? About a month to go. I am so nervous. Luckily my hubby is the calm sort and is prepared for anything. If he doesn't match he is going to get his Master's in Hospital Administration. So he will at least be working in the health care field.

My husband just certified his rank order of list and sent an email to his top choice program. They didn't respond to his email so I'm hoping that's not a bad sign. Anyway I'm praying for a match and a good match for everyone here. Good luck.

Hi @HOTdoc & nikkilang, what exactly did you guys say in the email to your top choice? Do you actually tell them that you ranked them as your #1? I was thinking about sending an email to my top choice as well!

Hi beingpatient14,

I told them that I'm writing to let them know of my strong and sincere interest in the program and that I ranked them at the top of my list.

My hubby kept it short and sweet. He just said that he was ranking the program 1 because he felt the program best fit his needs. He said thank you again for the interview. That's it pretty much. I was told the shorter the better because the PD's don't actually want to read a long winded email about why you are choosing them as your number 1 choice.

I don't know if it will make much of a difference and I'm a little panicked because they didn't respond and others have said programs responded to their emails but either way at this point it is out of our control. All we can do now is wait; pray that he matches; and go through with our contingency plan if he doesn't. I pray everyday for a match for everyone. Good luck.

I emailed my top choice too, no response ethier, but I don't think it means nothing special, is about the personalities and way to do things at each program, for example I went to a program and the assistant PD said we should emailed the PD but not expect an answer back because that is the way he keeps things objective, and the guy that I used to have most email communication back and forth, turned out did not ranked me on their top choices, so just pray, and hope for the best, I think going for a masters is a great back up plan, I am considering that too.

I went to one program where they even explained to us how they keep track of all emails, cards etc that the applicants send, even when they don't respond and at rank day they get all those emails and compare "who is the most interested" and that influence the rank list, In another program the PD said he doesn't even open those emails, cause "everyone say the same" and at the end he ranks people according to who he wants the most "I make a wish list" and we should do that too, so everyone is different...

Good luck to all, match day is almost here!

As usual Betiomom is right... that is exactly the kind of responses I have received from PDs as well...

I went through the match last year and soap... the best advice I can give you at this point is to make sure you are ready for the soap (HOPE NOT BUT JUST INCASE). Last year there were a few FM, IM, IM prelim, lots of surgery prelim, very few psych etc open in the soap. If you have interest in other specialty and wouldnt mind applying to those makesure you PS is ready. If you have new LORs get them uploaded. Maybe update the picture. If you work make sure you soap week is open, you spent a lot of time near the phone and computer.

At this point, things are out of your hand... its a good time for some personal reflection... family time... and most importantly think positive...

How is everyone doing? I hope well. It's so weird to have nothing else to do at this point but wait. I'm not good at waiting. Maybe this whole process is teaching me a life lesson. Anyway just wanted to find out how others are doing.

Hi Nikkilang80, I am personally doing good, super stressed out! tomorrow I am going to a dinner party at one program,(last match activity this year YAY!!) in the mean time doing step 3 qbank and typing online lessons, since I am slow...other than that super anxious impatient, I am going to California and visit some family over there taking the kids so hope that helps me relax and have some quality family time. Always praying for all of us!

Hey, I am also doing well. Cant seem to make my rank list. Having difficulty with the top 2 programs, dont know which one to rank first. I like both the programs and they both have given me really good vibe too. I dont know what to do...

@ AIR1, For me ranking was easy because I think all programs in FM are very similar, and usually everyone is friendly, so I based my ROL solely on location the closer to home the better, but I had a couple for wich I would have to take a plane to visit either way, so I took in consideration benefits, city I would like to live, cost of living, "safe"neighborhoods close enough from the hospital, but at the end I did what my husband said LOL, he told me to rank first the one I thought wanted me the most, cause you want to be where you feel appreciated, so I did that.

However I do not have a specific expectation of what I want to do in the future, I guess If you want to do something specific like fellowship you would have to go with the one that more likely would benefit you in that area, just my thoughts, hope it helps.

Hey. Just checking in to see how you all are doing? I'm trying really hard to enjoy the next two weeks instead of spending them a hervous wreck. Today I've tended towards nervous so I thought I would see how others are holding up. My hubby and I are have a fun weekend planned with our kids and I'm trying to fill my time up with any activity that you can think of. I hope others are doing well. Praying for good outcomes for everyone. I've been praying to God to grant me the grace to accept whatever the outcome.

Hey all. Just to reassure myself no email or information sent to us about or programs that assist with SOAP in any way indicate our match status. I know it but I need to hear that other people are getting emails about SOAP. Sorry for my crazy. Good luck and I keep praying.

Yes we all got that email. We had the same thing last year and everyone was freaking out. But i can tell you for a fact that my friends who matched also got the same email. The system is very fair... the only none fair part about residency process is getting the interview part. Everyone has their own way of selecting their candidates.

Trust the system and relax.....

I was sooooo going to mess with you but didnt want to be that jerk...lol Take it easy

Help

Hey guys, I have been following this thread since the beginning and wish you all the very best. I know these last few days are eating you out, the waiting is the worst if you have landed IVs. But fruits after this much patience can only be sweet.

Now, I am here to ask you for an evaluation. I know that some of us are opposed to this very thought of asking others about chances but I am at a remote location , this forum is my only window towards my peers.

I am an IMG like you guys.
YOG:2008
Step 1&2 CK: 230 (one chance)
CSassed (1)
ECFMG certified.
Doing an observership for a few months in a private clinic.
will do an externship and another observership.
no research.
no contacts , no PD to back me up. Absolutely solo journey.
have GC.

Now all of those are IM oriented. How and what to do to increase my chances for an FM residency , well , at least landing IV.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Thank you. And best of luck !

@Simiti, I don't know about your chances, but FM experience and letters of recomendation can help.

OMG guys monday is almost here!!!!!!!!!! I am dying, just spending time with the family trying to think positive, travel to see people I love because if I match I wont have much time to see them in 3 years... but I am anxious and exited I pray and hope we all get good news, I trust in God that after I did everything I could he will do what is best for me, and for all of us.
Good luck!!

Default post match

@hongctran
Unfortunately I did not match. That was no surprise considering I didn't get as many interviews. I have to go through the soap now; I haven't received any calls from programs yet. Things are not looking so good This whole process is so frustrating. Is anyone else going through soap? what are the chances of us matching with soap anyways? If soap doesn't work out, what are people planning to do for the whole year to improve their CV? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hang in there for people who did not match and stay strong!

Life doesn't always go as planned. I know a lot of people who had to go through the match 3 times and this is only my first time. This wasn't my year; but things happen for a reason that's what i believe in!

I am in the same boat as you. I had 3 IVs but didn't match. I am planning on taking Step 3, and looking for a research position.
I also applied for SOAP but don't think we IMGs have much chance in that.
Did you require visa?

Sorry to hear about not being matched @beingpatient14 and @ajaja. I didn't get many interviews in US for FM and this was my first year as well. Fortunately, I matched in Canada. Best of luck on SOAP!

@ajaja no i don't need a visa, i am a US citizen but what difference does it make since they discriminate so much between IMG and US grads. All the unfilled spots are pretty much filled up today so there is no hope for me tomorrow. I bet AMG's were the first priority in getting offers. Now i need to find a clinical job or something to do for this year. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
@betiomon/@hongctran congrats on matching! hope you guys have a wonderful start in your residencies!

Default post match jobs

@betiomom Hi, earlier in the forum you had posted a link for a clinical job in Miami. Do you know if I can call anyone about that, the ad itself doesn't have a number. I'm not even sure where to email my resume or who to contact? If you have any information please let me know, I would appreciate it.

Hi sorry, I only saw the add and posted it, I tried to look for it now but maybe it expired or something The original add has a link to send an email, but I can't when I try to do it now, so I assume it expired sorry.

Default LORs for next match

Hi I had a question about LOR's, so my LOR's are almost two years old. Does anyone know if I can still use those LOR's next year, would ECFMG still save those or would I need to get updated ones? how did the people that had to reapply to match again get updated letters?

I know the people that still didn't match through soap are upset like myself but at this point I just have to move on and think about next year. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hi All,

I matched as well so very happy.

Any of you who didnot match, do not give hope. I went thru it last year. Here are few things you should do:

- Keep an eye out of Frieda (free), residentswap (paid) and Findaresident(AAMC)(paid), they post of cycle position all the time. I didnt have any luck with them last year but doesnt mean you wont.

- I cannot emphasis enough on the importance of you personal statement. Brush it up.

- Keep busy. Volunteer, research, observer ship. IF you can find a paid position medical related even better. If you are not yet done with you medical school then space out your electives to fill time. Dont rush to graduate that is if you are an IMG and can control it. Do electives at places with residency programs.

- Volunteer positions to think about are Crisis centers, family clinic, hospitals, retirement homes. Anything that is close by to you.

- Take step 3 if you are planning to apply to specialties like psych, IM, peds. For FM it is not much of an asset unless you are an old graduate.

- Attend conferences if available so you can add them to ur resume.

I hope this helps, goodluck and dont worry hopefully everything will work out.

Step 2 cs result awaited

What are my chances in matching for FM in usa?

Will 1 month of USCE ( externship from medclerkships .org ) help?

What to do?

Hi sombiswas !! you have good credentials but 1 month of externship would not be enough, being an IMG and needing a visa; you would need at least 6 months in a place. Once your in a program for a long time doing an externship, people remember you more and are more willing to give an interview if you work hard!
