211 (1), 249 (1), CS in July. Canadian observership for 1 year in Pediatrics, need visa J1/H1b

What do you think of my chances? I am really worried about step1 score

I am applying to both Pediatrics and FM.

Hi,

I think your chances are great, specially with Clinical rotations in US and Canada. Those are the most important things! How many programs are you planning to apply?

I am planning to apply to 150 fm programs. Looking at all these high scores across the forum, my scores look discouraging.

So this is long and I need an honest

My husband is applying this year for 2014 match. His scores include 221/208 however 3 weeks ago we learned he failed his CS. the earliest date we could find is January. Other then this, he has USCE in psychiatry, anesthesia, and in medicine. He also has an upcoming observership with a hospital in January. He does not require a visa as he is a green card holder.

Now my question is he is applying to IM, FM, and psychiatry. What are his chances, where should he apply most, and if he doesn't match how should he plan this upcoming year? We loaded all the programs from match a resident due to this attempt.

Please help. And information would be extremely useful.

What is his YOG?
I think it's best to not apply this year and work on strengthening his application for next year( continued USCE, step 3) If he takes his CS in January most likely he won't get his results before the February rank order deadline. And without CS results + attempt, chances of IVs will also decrease.

@Summer20

As an IMG, it will be tough for him to apply without a passed CS result especially after he failed. January is too late to apply in my opinion, unless he has strong connections to a hospital and that hospital is willing to wait for him.

Like what winner09 said, it is best if he strengthens his application. I would advice that he choose just 1 specialty and focus on that. Spreading out an application will make it weak.

I think your husband may have a better chance in FM or psych. A friend of mine with similar scores, no failed attempts, 4 months hands-on USCE, and GC-holder applied extensively to both FM and IM (350 programs). Got 10 interviews each. He ranked IM programs highly, but he matched in FM. A couple of GC holders told me that even for immigrants, without the right credentials, IM can be tough to get into. But of course, if you want to give IM a shot, go for it.

Good luck! All the best!

Got it. So it's best if he strengthens his application and works on gaining more experience. We are still looking for an earlier date. He graduated in 2007. He has an observership scheduled with a hospital in January for two months and also I believe he found more hospitals to apply to for the observership; he just has to make some calls to gather their information. He is definitely looking to spend this year in gaining more USCE and toward his step 3

We'll have to wait and see...
The positive thing about it is getting to a 2nd chance to present yourself in the best light possible while maintaining consistency with your ERAS application

I checked their websites, it says <2 attempts but doesn't specify a score? Is that what you guys mean by filters?

Yep. Usually they'll have an unofficial filter for their own purposes depending on applicant pool.

Example: All exams passed on 1st try, with scores above 205+ etc., no visa needed etc.

Correct Answer a little bit impatient

Hi everyone ,I am finding it very difficult to just sit in front of the computer waiting for interviews!
My credentials: 218(1)/ CK results tomorrow/CS pass(1)/USCE 2 month observerships/2 US LORs-1 UK LOR/Need visa.
So far 2 rejections (South Nassau, Northern New Mexico)

I am wondering what are you guys doing (observership/externership/working/studying) while waiting for interviews??
I am studying for step 3 (difficult to concentrate!) and looking for a flexible job...

My friends and myself have not heard from any programs, either. FM programs are more likely to look at the whole application package (especially the CV and PS) to see our commitment to the specialty. USMLE scores alone do not guarantee IVs. That's why we might not hear from them as early as other specialties. I do not know if they wait for MSPE which will be released on Oct 1.

I havent heard any of my friends getting FM interviews either. Mostly IM.
I think FM def waits for MSPE because like you said its the whole package, they really want to see your patient interaction, and so Deans letter does reflect a lot. Although I feel after tomorrow we might start hearing more.

1st rejection from Providence St Peter today. The positive sign is that programs start to send out something. Does anyone know if programs send IV offers 1st then rejections later or vice versa or randomly?

Some programs just blindly screen out IMGs without ECFMG certification. Once you get CS result you will be an ideal candidates for any FM programs. Please be patient. I know two weeks now seems longer than two months

I did the same. I subscribed to match-a-resident all specialty progs. but you must double check their info against FREIDA and also against the program website themselves. many times, match a resident, freida, and the prog website have differing info regarding their selection criteria. which one is really updated and which one to follow is really confusing. most of the times, you end up guessing it yourself.

what I did is to look through each prog's selection criteria in all these resources and created my list of progs to apply to. I chose those whose selection criteria meet my credentials but also applied to those which nearly although not exactly match my credentials.

i only used match a resident as a guide to see whether the list i created based from freida and the prog website covers most of the recommended progs from match a resident.

good luck

Hey everyone,
im a newbie here.
good luck to all who have applied and i hope everyone makes it to their dream!
my stats are below. i applied to both IM and FM. i think my app has insufficient clinical experience to for FM and insufficient scores for IM.
honestly, i would be thrilled wherever i match so hopefully something will work out.

tuananhbsdk- i got the same rejection and also had the same question to ask hehe.

And information would be extremely useful.
summer20, your husband sounds like he has great stats. its unfortunate to hear about cs, but can i give an advice? im not very experienced, but from what ive heard from other forums.. your husband shouldnt wait till jan to write cs. pleny of people cancel their cs appointments a few days in advance of their scheduled date. keep monitoring the cs site fro any changes and tell your husband to start studying and be prepared to take asap. theres also an extension app you can dowload onto firefox which willl help monitor if anyone cancels appointments.
i had my cs appt in august and that app helped me find an appt in june. of course you have to be ready to fly to any of the locations and be ready to take it with last minute notification, but thats what i did, and im sure he can do it too. the apps name was check4change i think
just my two cents... hope it helps.. good luck!

I haven't had it yet, have to schedule it still (starting a new rotation so couldn't give them a concrete date) but I will def share. It might be the new thing in style these days. Email just said it was an informal skype chat to talk about the program, the city and to get to know me better before interviews go out.

Congratulations! Treat it as a formal one since you will speak to the PD. Best of luck!

There has not been much activity on this thread. Family Medicine is a very important specialty for me and I want to share my experience with those that are pursuing residency training in this great field.

So far I have 1 iv. Family Medicine seems very difficult to get into because scores do not matter. I'm not the applicant that they want. But I very much would be glad to get any interview to achieve my dream.

228/234/ CS pass (all first attempts), 2009 IMG, no USCE, Green card pending, no research.

Why do you think you are not the applicant they want? I'm sure if you want to become a family physician you are an applicant that they want. I'm sure you will do great this match year. (Y)

No. Rest assured if I get an interview I'm going to make them love me. I meant the traditional sought after applicants for family medicine ie the perfect applicant, would be a recent grad, with 2 years ACGME rotations. Scores are not that important for family. But being a Caribbean graduate or AOA or DO applicant is "THE PERFECT" individual to match. Since I'm an older IMG with no USCE the number of programs I could even at first meet the criteria for were limited. But I picked wisely and hopefully would have many more interviews. I'm looking forward to it!

Well, in my opinion you might be selling yourself a little short. But good luck and God speed all the same .

Not about selling myself short. It's simply selling myself. It's tough to get into Family Medicine. Else everyone would be posting the many interviews that there were invited to. It's a fact that the competition is tough. There is a certain profile for the ideal applicant. I may not fit that profile, but the few opportunities available need to be utilized. That's all I was trying to say. But whatever, your opinion is your opinion.

Sometimes not everything needs to be scrutinized. I'm sure that if I get interviews obviously I am the applicant that they want. Otherwise they would not have offered me the interview. Just saying....

Default Rejection from Alaska lol

I can't believe I applied there... probably they didn't ethier, anyway I applied to all I had the minimal requirement according to MAR but turns out I had to send a specific personal statement saying why Alaska and what skills I had to serve their very isolated small towns... I read the web site after I send the application OOOPPPPSSSS lol, anyway I don't think it would have made a difference, just in case any of you is going to apply there, now you know

i think you've got a good chance. I hope you especially applied to the schools you rotated through and got your LOR's from. I think thats deff a plus point for Carribean students.

hopeful25 did JPH send you an e-mail confirmation for the interview date, I know they are busy, but I would think it shouldn't take more than 24 hours just to send an email confirmation

I didn't email them because in their invite email they said to contact one of the two people they had named, and they provided their telephone numbers. I called today, but got an answering machine, so I thought I'd call them again tomorrow morning before sending an email.

Thank you. Don't think negative, friend. The best place for you will surely come along. I've gotten plenty of rejections to bring my hope down.. but we must keep our chin up throughout this whole process. Its a long process and we are still very early in the path.

Default No IV yet either

Getting scared as I haven't received any IV yet either. I applied a little bit late on Sept 28 as I was waiting for CK scores. I also just got my CS score on Oct 9 and resubmitted them in right away, but not sure if some programs may have inactivated my application. Can I get someone's opinion on my application:

219(1)/239(1)/CS(1)/Need J1 (Canadian citizen)/4 months USCE + 2 months Canadian clinical experience/2 coauthored papers/81 programs applied to/Graduating Dec 2013

No ECFMG certificate yet as I still need to graduate. Finishing my last rotation in November as I am studying at a school in Australia. I'm also scared that I didn't add my North American rotations in the ERAS form as my MSPE shows this already. I only added my research, volunteer and work experience there. Is it too late to send out more applications this weekend? Thanks for your help.

Thank you! i heard people in the south is family friendly, and the reason I am applying 6 years after graduation is because I have 2 kids ages 2 and 5, so i emailed a lot of programs before applying, the only ones that answer was arkansas and louisiana saying that they understood I took time to raised the kids and I was welcome to apply, so i guess they are family friendly for real, now i have a IV from TX, so, you just need to tell them your reasons i guess

81 programs is a safe number given your profile for FM. But if you can afford, applying more may open up a few more chances. Do you apply in Canada and Australia as well?

Will be applying to Canada FM as well. Didn't apply to Australia though as my wife prefers N. America. Just want to keep all options open in terms of North America. Really disheartening not hearing any positive news from US applications.

They may be waiting for your step 2 and ecfmg certification. If they have not send rejections, chances are still there. Let's put it that way

I got rejection from Missouri this morning as well. It seems they send them all at once.
Good luck to all, especially those graduating in 2007

Don't worry too much about the rejections. Which programs gave you an interview so far?

I am new to this forum. My husband is currently applying to the match for family medicine. It has been such a roller coaster ride so far. He has had two IV offers so far. One from UAMS Fayetteville and one from Clinton Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately Clinton Memorial Hospital is closing their residency program and pulled out of the match. So now we only have 1 IV. Loosing his second IV was pretty tough. Going backwards never feels good. Anyway I thought I would join the conversation. It's nice to hear about others getting interviews and to have people to chat with. Good luck to everyone.

7 interviews, still 1 pending phone interview (program wrote in the email that they have selected me for a phone interview but still yet to call, I know it takes time, but this is strange). At least I still have 7 inv's.
